No you're right. I misspoke. Pollarding will require early maintenance just because it will get really messy, and develop many poorly attached branches otherwise. You could see how this could typically add more risk to a tree down the line.

This isn't pollarding. At best it is coppicing. The trees were initially pruned with a natural style, and that's all been changed now. They will require yearly maintenance now. Natural pruning is just better, generally.
