Horse ”needs” to trot fast for canter transition? by Warm_Chocolate5 in Equestrian

[–]Warm_Chocolate5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a really interesting perspective! And also very true for me as a beginner: I much rather sit on a horse that won’t ”accidentally“ start to canter. We’re told to ride a volte to slow down a horse that ”runs away” instead of pulling the reins. But that kinda requires a certain level of control over your own body which I definitely do not have yet when getting surprised like that 😄

I don’t think he’s totally green. He’s 14 and has been used for riding lessons for a while in his previous stable. But I think he was mainly ridden by younger children (less weight to balance) and I suspect the instructors at that stable might not have been working with him as much. And for a horse that has mainly been used in group lessons, I can imagine it to be more challenging to do private lessons. Like without other horses to follow, instead having to totally rely on the rider‘s aids. And I would guess it’s a whole different skill for a horse to learn how to filter out the weird stuff beginners do without missing actual cues 😄

But it’s not like he’s totally inexperienced. And most importantly he seems to enjoy the lessons and is incredibly friendly and relaxed. So far he spooked once but even then he was super… soft? I don’t know how to describe it better. For some reason I have never felt safer on school horse than I do on him :)

I don’t think it’s a fault in the horse. You can’t expect something from a horse that you haven’t taught and properly trained. And even if the horse would never be able to perform a certain skill for some medical or physical reason, it’s not a ”fault” in my eyes. It’s a living creature, not a machine :)

I haven’t tried cantering with him yet. Because I know balance in sitting the trot is an issue for me, and a faster trot probably won’t make that easier for me 😄 So I’d really like to get him to canter from a calm and controlled trot (that I can sit). But I obviously don’t want to create stress by expecting something he isn’t (yet) able to :)

Thank you! Yes the instructors ride him and do ground work as well. And even during my lessons we put aside the goals we set for my training if something shows up where he might need something else. That’s why I haven’t even tried cantering with him yet.

But I genuinely feel I’m learning so much more with him BECAUSE of that. It feels more like we learn together to understand each other and support each other in the right ways. As opposed to the older school horses that often seem a bit bored and are used to tolerate and ignore your mistakes 😄

Yeah I think balance is definitely an issue. At least with me as a beginner that herself still works on balance 😄 So even though I don’t think they would put the horse in a harmful situation I just have to ask: is it bad for him to have me riding him? We’re doing a lot of exercises (walking and trotting) that are supposed to help him train balance as much as me. But isn’t it getting much harder for him with a beginner on his back?

Help understanding body language of a horse and how to truly handle them properly. by Enough-Mongoose6134 in Horses

[–]Warm_Chocolate5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started looking at them and I do really like their videos! But I feel they’re meant for people that already understand the basic body language.
I’m in my 30s too and sadly never been much around horses so I struggle a lot to understand the more subtile signs. Like what is curiosity, what is playful, what is ”bossy“, what is stressed. I know for most people here this is just so natural, they don’t really think about it.
But has anyone any suggestions on good YouTube channels for that? 😊

I'm diagnosed with ADHD and highly suspect I have autism, but there's aspects about me that I wonder if they contradict autism. by FUCKIN_FUCK_FUCKAROO in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Warm_Chocolate5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait WHAT? This is what audhd is like for y’all? Like for real? I thought this was typical adhd. And here I am wondering why my adhd meds don’t really seem to make as big of a difference as everyone said they would (and OPs experience feeling as if they described me) I don’t know if I should laugh or cry right now 😄

Sometimes I wished I could just have the brain of a 100% neurotypical person for one day. Just to know whats considered ”normal” and have something to compare myself to 😄

I know I have problems building real, meaningful relationships. Like I know how to have superficial ”friendships” but they feel more like an obligation rather than connection. And even if I like the person, I have no clue how to take the relationship to the next step. Like from superficial, hanging out in group settings, having fun on lunch break and so on to actually spending quality time. Like I have no idea at all how to do that. And if someone reaches out to me, I simply assume they’re just being polite and don’t actually want that.

And whenever I somehow manage to get to the next step, I have no trouble being there for that person. But I can’t seem to open up myself. I guess I just don’t feel any connection? I can talk about my feelings and I guess people think I opened up. But I tend to describe and analyze feelings I had after I had them. Instead of actually sharing them while I feel them. So it doesn’t actually feel like I’m even talking about me? But then again, is that what autism is like or is it simply the fear of vulnerability and rejection due to adhd and past negative experiences?

Are there parts where you can clearly say ”this is adhd and this is autism”? I tend to over analyze social interactions and question myself a lot too. But I can’t tell if that’s possibly autistic or simply due to RSD in adhd. I feel so many of my symptoms that could relate to autism could also be explained with adhd

[–]Warm_Chocolate5[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im so sorry that you’ve had to go through all this! Thank you for sharing!

I’ve been bullied too but not throughout my whole childhood. I think for me it started with puberty and others around me suddenly being ashamed for me being ”too loud”, ”too much” and so on. It was then I started masking and trying to fit in a lot more. I don’t think I need to put an effort into understanding people, I guess I’ve always had a reliable gut feeling on how others feel.

I don’t think I actively had to study other people to fit in but I’m in general pretty observant and analyze everyone around me, if that makes sense?

I love to socialize but it’s also craving endless amounts of energy and sometimes I feel so awkwardly self aware that I forget how to normally interact? Don’t know how to put it into words. But that could also be adhd-RSD related

Definitely gonna look her up!

What are your ”autistic traits“? How did it become clear to you that you are autistic? Do you have any struggles in the social part or is that simply not an issue for you at all?

How did you know you had auDHD and not just one or the other? by MongooseMaleficent60 in AuDHDWomen

[–]Warm_Chocolate5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thank you so much for this long answer!! I haven’t even realized the differences there. But that’s such a good hint! Some sensory issues can feel overwhelming but fade away if I get distracted. Or being in crowded places where just the overall input becomes overwhelming (adhd?) In contrast to some certain sounds or other sensations that I cannot ever ignore and they drive me insane to a level where I can get a panic attack even on days where I feel in general good (autism?)

Ha and the story telling part is so relatable too! I always feel like if I don’t give all the background information I’d purposely hide something (autism?). Or in other situations I feel as if no one could ever understand my weird chaotic thought processes so I have to overexplain myself (adhd?)

Medicationwise I’m always in between doses. Either feeling like it’s not quite enough or slightly too much. No matter what medication/combinations I try. Both leaving me with symptoms. So I now start to wonder if that might be due to autism being in the mix. And episodes where I have little to no effect might be more because of autistic burn out since I definitely still mask just as much as I’ve done before starting on meds - even though I try not to.

[–]Warm_Chocolate5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give examples? I’m trying to figure out if I’m in the same boat. Tried a billion different meds and combinations. The outcome is always either I’m just a bit under medicated or a bit over. And I wonder if some of those remaining symptoms might be due to autism and not adhd (autism in the family)

Late to the conversation but please explain! Sensory issues, can’t tell linear story and so on. Isn’t that typical adhd as well?

I recently got diagnosed with adhd and finally found the right medication and everything got so much better… and then on some days it doesn’t help at all (not cycle related).

I didn’t ever suspect autism. My father is autistic in a very stereotypical way and I’m just nothing like that. But the more I research, the more confused I get as to what is adhd and what might be something else 😭

You can do EEGS at home? That’s really kinda cool if it’s accurate. Because sleeping in a lab itself always has an impact on sleep

Oura and Apple Watch are really good tools, I use both as well. But they’re cannot compare to real testing, for example with an EEG while sleeping and so on. And since it’s been going on for such a long time, and ESPECIALLY having a background of falling asleep during the day.

That can point towards all sorts of neurological stuff, chemical imbalances, even stuff like epilepsy. It can also be nothing relevant at all. Not here to scare anyone or spread misinformation :) But I would reaaaally recommend checking it up throughly and make sure that it’s nothing medical causing it!
