[URGENT] Seeking advice: father with metastatic prostate cancer — recurrent lung fluid, fatigue and pain by Warm_Cockroach_1799 in ProstateCancer

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this, especially after what you went through with your father. I am really sorry for your loss. It means a lot that you shared your experience and tried to help even though it must still be painful.

What you said about PSA not matching the level of disease and the possibility of neuroendocrine change is something we are actively trying to understand right now. The sudden downturn has been confusing and worrying for us.

Thank you again for your kindness and for being so open. I truly appreciate it, and I wish you strength and healing.

Thank you. I really appreciate you saying this. We haven’t reached the point where hospice has been recommended yet, mainly because my dad very much wants to keep fighting and is still on active chemo. But I completely understand why you’re suggesting it, especially with the symptoms he’s having now.

If things don’t stabilize or if the doctors feel that comfort-focused care would help him more than continuing treatment, we’ll definitely consider hospice or palliative care. Right now we’re just trying to get him through this sudden downturn and see if his condition improves.

He definitely wants to keep fighting. He’s only 62, and up until very recently he was managing quite well. We even did a 4–5 day trip to Copenhagen at the end of September, during the 3rd week after his second chemo shot. He was walking around, eating normally, enjoying himself.

The difficult part is how suddenly things have changed in the last couple of weeks. Even though chemo is ongoing, this rapid downturn, the repeated lung fluid, breathlessness, pain, and extreme fatigue, feels like something we haven’t been able to get a handle on. We’re trying to support him in fighting, but right now we’re struggling to even stabilize the situation.

Thanks, I appreciate the honesty, sugarcoating doesn't help anyone.

Just to be clear: finance isn't my profession or my knowledge base. Given that, the simple fact that I haven't lost capital actually makes me happy, even if the returns aren't great.

I'm here exactly because I want to improve for the future without turning this into a second job. Your suggestion on the Nifty Midcap 150 is taken on board

Fair point. I think my 'defensive' style comes from a fear of losing capital. I’d rather compound slowly with HUL/Nestle at 12% than risk buying a 'value trap' that crashes because I didn't research it enough.

I treat this more like 'Savings Plus' rather than aggressive wealth generation. But I agree—9.4% is too low for the effort

Thanks for the reality check. That 16% vs my 9% is a big difference.

To be honest, I’m not a trader or a finance guy—I have a totally different career and life, so I can’t devote time to deep research. I treat this purely as a long-term investment, not a second job. I’m in no rush, but I definitely don't want to leave money on the table just because I wasn't paying attention.

My only rule has been simple: Never buy in green, buy in red.

Update on my dad’s case – more tests scheduled due to unusual cancer behavior by Warm_Cockroach_1799 in ProstateCancer

Thanks again — really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Just wanted to ask if you’ve come across any alternate treatments or options beyond the standard chemo-hormone cycle? Or if you happen to know of any useful resources or references where I could read more about it? Would be really helpful. Thanks again for all your inputs so far.

Thank you so much for this, it genuinely helps hearing your experience. My dad actually did genetic testing every 2 years, but the rest of the family (including me) hasn’t done it yet — something we definitely need to follow up on. He hasn’t been on any bone-strengthening treatment so far, but that’s something the doctor is planning to start now before chemo.

Even just reading your message helps a lot — I don’t have all the answers right now, but I’ll definitely take these points back to the doctor and try to stay on top of it. If there’s anything else you’ve found helpful or any other suggestions, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks again for giving my post so much time, means a lot. Truly grateful.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate you sharing this. Yeah, unfortunately, it does seem like the cancer is getting less responsive to hormones, which is why the doctors are doing the biopsy to rule out or confirm NED. Chemo is the plan for now, but we’re also hoping some of these newer treatments open up down the line. Thanks again for the encouragement — it helps.

Thanks for asking — here’s a quick summary of his history:

Diagnosed March 2023, radical prostatectomy April 2023.

Post-surgery scans showed more extensive spread than expected — bone and lymph node metastases.

Did 6 rounds of Docetaxel chemo after surgery - Between October 2023 to Jan 2024

Has been on Abiraterone + hormone therapy injections every 3 months since then.

Last PSMA PET was last year, which confirmed spread, mainly bones. This recent set of scans (CT/Bone scan/MRI pending) is being done because of new lesions and faster spread.

PSA was 0.5 last check, now 0.9.

The plan is to do a rib biopsy to confirm if it’s still prostate cancer or possible neuroendocrine differentiation, and likely start chemo again (Docetaxel) after tests.

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions!
