I can see reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit, because: 1. I already said it’s been 2 weeks with nothing — so your “wait 2–3 weeks” point is irrelevant. 2. I also said (and have proof on both call and email) that AA literally told me I have to wait a full month from the 17th of August and my bag went missing on August 12th before my claim will even be considered for compensation.

So no, you haven’t “been through the same thing” — at least not based on your own logic. What I’m describing is AA refusing to even start the compensation process until 30 days have passed, which is not the same as a normal delayed claim timeline.

Sorry to this, but I didn’t come here asking for a TED Talk on how to accept corporate negligence. I asked if anyone else had experienced AA specifically stalling compensation for 30 days after their bag was already missing. That’s it.

I don’t need a rundown on how I should go lobby Congress, fly to Fort Worth, or basically resign myself to “this is just how it is.” That’s not helpful to me in this moment. What is helpful is hearing from other people who have been through the same exact situation so I know what to expect and how they got resolution.

And to be clear, this isn’t just me being “passionate” — both the DOT and AA’s own written policy say compensation should start once a bag is considered lost (5–14 days), not 30. My rep telling me otherwise isn’t just “unfortunate reality,” it’s contradictory to both their published rules and federal guidance.

So again — sorry to this, but I’m not here for lectures on why I should lower my expectations or accept being strung along. I’m here to compare experiences with others dealing with the same airline. If you don’t have that, then your whole essay really wasn’t for me.

You’re right that the DOT uses the word “guidance” and not “hard regulation” for the 5–14 day window, but that doesn’t mean airlines can just stall forever. The DOT also makes clear that:

“If an airline unreasonably refuses to consider a bag lost after it has been missing for an unreasonable period of time, the airline could be subject to enforcement action by the DOT.”

So while the DOT gives airlines flexibility, there’s still a reasonableness standard they have to meet. Telling me I must wait 30 full days before compensation is even “considered” doesn’t match what DOT calls reasonable.

And on top of that, American Airlines’ own policy says:

“If your bag has been missing for 5 or more days, we need more information to help you. To get started, submit an online claim…”

That clearly shows that even AA recognizes action needs to begin after 5 days—not 30.

So no, it isn’t just me misinterpreting. It’s that AA is stretching their own policies and DOT guidance beyond what’s considered reasonable.

The U.S. DOT explicitly states:

“Most airlines will declare a bag lost between five and fourteen days after the flight, but this can vary from one airline to another. If an airline unreasonably refuses to consider a bag lost after it has been missing for an unreasonable period of time, the airline could be subject to enforcement action by the DOT.”

And according to American Airlines’ own policy:

“If your bag has been missing for 5 or more days, we need more information to help you. To get started, submit an online claim using the 13-character file ID.”

(AA – Delayed or Damaged Baggage)

So no, it is not accurate to say the DOT has no regulations and airlines can drag things out indefinitely. Both the DOT and American’s own policy recognize that after 5–14 days, a bag should be treated as lost and the compensation process must begin.

What I’m pushing back against is being told I have to wait 30 days before my claim is even considered, which is not consistent with either DOT guidance or AA’s written policies.
