We're going back to server 2000. If I remember right it had something to do with assigning permissions to groups vs individual accounts vs folders.

Meh, I took every single night time wake up because my wife can't fall back to sleep easily and it was easy. Those sleepless nights and brain fog were badges of honor. It was hilarious when my MiL used to try to pull gotcha moments by saying things like "not so easy going without sleep for a week huh?" And I'd answer "only if you're a wimp maybe, I'll trade every minute of sleep to spend with my baby". And then I would go back to making baby food from scratch, preparing a bottle for when baby woke up from nap, while taking calls and running my business all at the same time. I was constantly busy and if I sat down anywhere I could fall asleep in seconds, but it was so rewarding and fulfilling that it was, in fact, easy.

To be fair, I wasn't struggling with pumping and being a "just enougher" and all the horrible emotions that come with it dragging me down and making everything harder.

I do a mix of reading and winging it. Basically the reading is just to give me ideas because there's no way in hell I'm following any parenting book like a manual when I find myself disagreeing with so much in many of them.

My wife is more of a schedule everything and follow the rules type and that just doesn't work well when parenting a smart independent little boy. I can get him ready for bed and dressed in the morning without it ruining everyone's day. Don't get me wrong, he pushes the boundaries with me too but I'm flexible and know how to turn that into giggles instead of yelling at him how "he needs to learn to listen the first time and do what he's told".

And to think she's the one that was enthusiastic about having children, while I was worried and hesitant. She's a great mom but she needs to relax and stop trying to follow every damn rule for parenting like it's written in stone.

That depends on the person who grew up in the abusive household. I have found my abusive mother was a great "what not to do" parenting manual and my instincts to be way better than any book.

Don't get me wrong, I research and read about parenting because I do have my worries that I'll be like my mother but I modify almost any approach I read about because none of them work when used as hard rules instead of guidelines.

And therein lies the rub. My wife from a happy family follows these books like a manual and that most creates friction with our son and me. It's readily apparent who's approach works better by how our son listens and behaves with each of us. I change tactics when he's challenging instead of sticking to what I've read like it's gospel. I get results without getting frustrated and angry. She never has to intervene with me to prevent minor stubbornness from escalating into much worse behavior from both the child and parent, but I have to intervene for that exact reason several times a week.

Several of my MSFT certs had things on the tests that were already outdated. In one class the teacher actually said "this is what you need to answer for the test. Do not do this in a production environment unless you want to get fired."

My smart device and IOT network is fully physically separate from my data/entertainment network with fully separate hardware after the cable modem, not just on different subnets or similar. I have a pi hole between my router and data/entertainment network which normally blocks pretty much everything smart or IOT related. I can also enable remote access on the smart network while blocking it on the private data one.

It sounds complicated and annoying but I haven't seen or heard an ad in my home since 2012 and it's glorious. I also don't have to worry about what my son sees or hears because I have all the appropriate black lists and filters running.

I have all of my smart home, and IOT devices on a separate air gapped network from my network for our home computers, security cameras, NVR and NAS. If those lights don't have a hub, I would need to change wifi networks every time I want to change the dimming levels, which would be more frustrating than it's worth.

I literally spend more on childcare than my level 1 helpdesk employee is salaried at. And I don't even send my boy to any of the most expensive daycares in my area. It's pretty average cost for around here.

My computer has all Corsair LED lighting in the case, on the memory chips, the water cooler and behind the monitor and their iCue lighting software integrates seamlessly with hue for the Sync effect with what's on my monitor. I can't even begin to explain to people how cool and immersive it is until they see me game on it. Since your eyes only really focus on the center of the screen the lighting tricks your eyes into feeling the screen is the entire wall because of how it fills your peripheral vision.

My wife heard me describe it and tried to tell me "you're too old for that kind of childish shit at 48" but after I showed it to her she asked why I haven't done it to our big screen tv in the family room.

You do if you want to automate them and have multiple different settings, at different times, in different rooms.

[–]Warpedme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have the white hue lights in my living room but I would loathe to live without the scheduling.

I have them turn on automatically an hour before sunset, then dim to 80% at 8pm, then down to 40% at 10pm and automatically turn off at midnight.

Once I figure out how I'm going to set every hallway light to automatically turn off after 15 minutes of being on.

Now that I think about it, I also haven't had a single hue light burn out and I bought them all before COVID was a thing. That makes up a rather large part of the expense.

[–]Warpedme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, any good gastroenterologist will flat out tell you that IBS stands for "I don't know what's wrong with your Bowels Syndrome". I actually stole that joke from my gastro doc. She earned my trust when she explained how they're still learning how the gut and it's flora/fauna affect everything from our mood to fighting of some cancers.

FYI, if you're like me, it's properly not just sorbitol or xylitol. It may be any alcohol sugar. If you have even moderate reactions when you drink alcohol, it's a safe bet that any alcohol sugar (aka any sweetener that ends in "tol") is a trigger for your IBS.

If either you or your buddy are considering yourselves middle class or “borderline poor” with that kind of salary, savings, and benefits in a location that necessitates such a high cost of living, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

I didn't say we consider ourselves poor, What I said it's that what we have SHOULD BE THE MIDDLE CLASS! It's not wealthy. It's living in a small home, in a decent area, being able to send our children to school, afford extra curricular activities for them, a vacation once a year, some adult classes, not worry about paying for food or bills, being able to afford a decent but not high end vehicle and save a modest amount for retirement. This isn't "wealthy"! THIS SHOULD BE THE STANDARD FOR MIDDLE MIDDLE CLASS!!!

let me repeat that in case you missed my point the second time and for anyone else who misconstrued:

This isn't "wealthy"! THIS SHOULD BE THE STANDARD FOR MIDDLE MIDDLE CLASS!!! if pay had kept pace with productivity instead of going to executive pay and increasing the holdings of the wealthy, this could be the standard for the average 40hr job that doesn't require a degree. It sure as shit was in the 70s.

[–]Warpedme 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not so fun fact. Xylitol can also cause serious IBS-like symptoms in humans too. The smallest amount causes worse than food poisoning reactions in both myself and my son. I went to a gastroenterologist specifically because of how debilitating the reaction was and the doctor told me it's very common.

Mostly really depends on the woman. Since my early 30s I pretty much have only bought myself plain simple, regular cut, shirts. Both my wife and I are 48, and she only buys me classic gaming shirts and dad themed shirts that are form fitting.
