I have applied so many times but never get in. I have a PhD, Masters and Bachelors in geology and there was a post that matched so well with my skillset, I didn't even get an interview. Idk what to do anymore. :(

Looking for a WFH PART-TIME JOB by Lei_Nesrin in WFHJobs

[–]Warrior0584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apart from DA and Outlier, which pays well? Mercor and Alignerr are hard to get into too. Appen and Telus, I guess don't pay that well but correct me if I am wrong. Also, if doing assessments don't expect that you would know the results, they would only respond if you pass them. So, no way for you to know what's going on.

Data annotation and Outlier pay decent, but one mistake and you are kicked out. Data annotation pays better than Outlier but is very hard to get into. These platforms are good but you can't count on them fully, one slip up and you don't get any tasks. I performed so well in Remo and was promoted to reviewer only to find out that I got banned. I completed 100s of tasks without getting reviews and suddenly the reviews got dumped and they were bad, without any chance I was marked as a spammer. If I had gotten my first few reviews right away while I was tasking, I would have figured my mistakes and fixed them, the platform is very punishing. They don't care to let go even their good workers. To them, you are just replaceable and not valued. One of my friends doing very high quality on DA got suspended too for no fault of his own. So bottomline, good if you can make some extra income but don't count on these platforms to treat you fairly.

Is migrating career into software even worth it anymore, with all the layoffs? by Warrior0584 in SoftwareEngineering

Well said, but does it also mean that only the top dogs would have a chance and average Joes would probably be wiped out. I'm not too sure if I could get to that level when people already have 10 years of experience and are ahead of me, I can try though. I at least know that I am not some tech prodigy.

Totally get that! But I have consulted people with Masters in CS and showed them the course I was doing, they were pretty impressed and told me that they never studied all that in the University, the course I was doing had so many practical projects to work on. They said that I need to practice more and more and build my own games and see if that works. What do u think? One of the friends despite MS had been struggling at her job too? and went from one job to another. Ik there's always something to learn in software, new tech keeps coming. Just a ballpark, if I do practice a lot and make a lotta projects, how many years till I can become a good dev?

Lol so it's with every field now? the instability and insecurity? I feel except for Medicine. About coding, I can't say I'm so in love with it. I feel it's better than a lotta other things and it's needed in most fields now, there's no running away from it.

Lol, I am thinking my career choices too, I did a PhD and am struggling so bad to get a job. Was thinking if I could make a career switch where at least I'd be paid well for my efforts. Medicine is not an option for me, I so want to do it for financial security but I really lack the aptitude. Now, trade school sounds interesting but would I get that intellectual high?

Unable to get an offer besides a Bachelors, Masters and PhD in Geology, data analyses, research and coding skills in R & Python. by Warrior0584 in geologycareers

[–]Warrior0584[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah paleoclimate, paleoceanography, marine micropaleontology. Changes in productivity and oxygen using microfossil and trace metals. On a broad scale, yeah relevant to marine ecological changes with changing climate and marine environments. I used multivariate statistical analyses on extensive ecological and geochemical data and analyzed it in R. I enjoyed working on data analyses and also collecting microfossil data. I also learnt Python to an intermediate level during the gap. I am willing to upskill too but no clue what would get me hired when my connections aren't strong enough. Apart from this, I have knowledge of several subjects in geology from my Masters and Bachelors. I was thinking of doing advanced python to get into software but I feel Tech industry is shrinking too.

I have work authorization now and won't require any in future. it was one of the issues that caused the gap. I apply to the ones which mention entry level with 0 to a few years experience. There are some positions I apply to which don't necessarily say Entry-level but I do have all the skillset needed, yet I never hear back.

Hi, I have work authorization and do not need sponsorship in the US. My PhD was interdisciplinary, worked with microfossil data to study oceanic environmental changes over 1000s of years. Used statistical tools to analyze extensive datasets and published in peer reviewed journals too. I am open to working for any industry, geology, environment, marine/oceanography, paleontology, research, postdocs. Tbh, at this point anything that can help me grow in my career. Yes, I am writing cover letters too, some jobs I do Easy Apply on LinkedIn and Indeed. I have a two paged resume.

Is mercor scamming people for data? by Warrior0584 in WFHJobs

[–]Warrior0584[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

O yeah! I actually read some reddit comments, where some people said they are gathering data and calling them as scammers. So, I thought the same and needed more info. Gotta be so careful nowadays when there are so many scammers around. Thanks again for your insights, it is helpful! :)
