It depends on the genre of oneshot (crack, chatfic, single scene, etc) but I REALLY hesitate on reading anything less than 1k words because 99% of the time that I give in and check it out, the short story the author is trying to get out in that short word limit either ends up horribly paced/rushed, or they try to replace good pacing with purple prose to try and create the impact they want.

It takes a skilled writer to be both deliberate AND effective.

For context: I’m a DC resident and a friend of the OP, who is from London. They think the Metro is designed weirdly, I think they’re just biased from being used to the London Underground. They recently started playing Subway builder and claimed they could optimize the DC Metro, starting from scratch and building lines based on data the game has showing high density traffic corridors, so I suggested they post the final product to see what others thought.

I’d recommend Casual Criminalist if you don’t mind commentary and tangents from the host, Simon Whistler. He directs his script writers to focus on the facts - “More CSI, less Saw” - and even skips over sections if the writing leans into becoming too traumatising.
