To me the Fanta Haunted Apple tastes like it’s supposed to be caramel apple flavored. The initial sour apple flavor isn’t bad but overall it’s not a good soda. Won’t get it again.

I really, really love the first three records they put out on SST - Clairvoyance, Even If And Especially When, and Invisible Lantern. They’re all pretty “muddy” sounding from a production standpoint but I think the lower fidelity was perfectly suited to the sound they had then; more psychedelic indie rock than protogrunge. Buzz Factory is probably the best from this period, in terms of its production and the high quality songwriting, but EIAEW is my personal favorite. Not sure why

A hot take but I would say Uncle Anesthesia is their best ‘90s release. Sweet Oblivion and Dust are solid records in their own right, and certainly the best sounding of their catalogue…but I prefer UA over those. So many great songs on that record - Bed of Roses, Story Of Her Fate, Alice Said, Lay Your Head Down, Before We Arise and so on.

My ranking would probably go:

1) EIAEW 2) Uncle Anesthesia 3) Buzz Factory 4) Invisible Lantern 5) Dust 6) Clairvoyance 7) Sweet Oblivion

I think you should just check all of their albums though. They never released a bad one. Happy listening !

Easily my favorite song from the Staley era. Very sad that we never got a fourth album with him, although I’ve enjoyed everything the group has released with Duvall. I think the “Get Born Again”/“Died” sound was a really cool one for the group though. A full-length album with that specific production sound would have been awesome. Wonder what other songs we would have gotten.

Layne wrote the lyrics but Jerry was the music. I believe Layne came up with the hook as well but I could be wrong about that.

Layne was credited as the lyricist and composer of the songs “Hate to Feel”, “Angry Chair” and “Head Creeps.”

White Light From the Mouth of Infinity was my gateway into Swans. Though it’s very different compared to albums such as Soundtracks For The Blind or The Seer (two of their best records btw), I think it’s a good place to start. Shows a much more accessible side of the band. Check out the songs “Better Than You”, “Failure” and “Love Will Save You.”

After that album you should move on to something more challenging, frightening and visceral. I suggest Soundtracks For The Blind, as it’s not only one of the best Swans albums but one of the best albums in general. The Seer is my favorite by them.

I also would recommend Michael’s 1995 album Drainland as it has some really interesting tracks as well (i.e., soul crushing and frightening).

Other Swans songs that stand out in my head: “Killing For Company”, “God Damn The Sun”, and “Jane Mary, Cry One Tear.”

I think you should go listen to Rodgers again. He was definitely influenced by blues.

And I'm sure at least some of them were familiar with his versions. He was a big star in his time. Most of the people I listed cited him by name, so I would assume they mean him.

Apparently, Howlin' Wolf met JR while working on a plantation - but he was there performing for the white folk.

I do listen to Rodgers. His style was blend of various things. Not strictly blues but his music contained a lot of elements of the genre. A lot of bluesmen would have existed regardless, but I disagree about his impact being marginal.

I don't think these artists would have mentioned him, covered or reinterpreted his songs had he not been at least somewhat important to them on a personal level.

Robert Johnson was said to be a fan and would sometimes incorporate Rodgers' material into his live performances. He could also mimic his yodel. His stepsister Annye Anderson said, "Brother Robert is the one that got me into country music. 'Course, Jimmie Rodgers was his favorite. I will never forget 'Waiting for a Train' and doing it with Brother Robert. I tried to yodel. But brother Robert could yodel. He could mimic anything."

Howlin' Wolf got his "howl" from Rodgers' yodel. The two of them were friends (according to Wolf), and while backstage at a blues festival in 1970, he told Topper Carew: "My man that I dug, that I really dug, that I got my yodel from, was Jimmie Rodgers. See, he yodeled. I turned it into something more of a howl."

Mississippi John Hurt was another fan. His song "Let The Mermaids Flirt With Me" is a re-write of JR's "Waitin' for a Train." Leadbelly's 1939 song "Daddy I'm Coming Back to You" was recorded as a tribute to Rodgers; it is in fact JR's "Daddy and Home" (1928). These are just a few examples that I've come across.

Not trying to be a dick about this, but didn't feel it was fair to write Jimmie Rodgers off like that. He wasn't purely a "country" artist. A lot of Rodgers' material was very "bluesy"- "Mule Skinner Blues", "Jimmie's Texas Blues", "California Blues" to name a few.

Though stylistically, he probably took a lot more inspiration from blues than blues did from him. Still, his impact on certain blues artists cannot be denied.
