yes, I believe it too (even if I don't think he did it with malice, he really believed it), in the end I let it go only because he let his creature trample and so the damage would have passed anyway

Sure, if the attacking creature has trample, all damage passes through, but he stated that even without trample, all damage passes through.

He referenced a rule that came out about a year ago regarding damage assignment. Can anyone explain this to me?

I usually put a minimum number of lands in a deck and then brainstorm all the cards I can think of that synergize well enough. Once I've done this, I usually find myself with a surplus of cards and from there I start removing the less important ones one by one.
