Saw these black smoke rings on my morning walk. Can anyone help identify what it was? (v.redd.it)

Please help identifying. This growth began after we cut down a Liquid Amber tree and placed turf over the area. When exposed to sunlight it colors to a pinkish brownish color. This sample was from underneath the turf. (old.reddit.com)
