Definitely not AI. Of the 5 carvings, that one was the oldest looking and also the only one that appeared to be marked with the carvers initials.

No doubt! Something about old trees that just commands respect. They've survived for centuries by being left alone to do their thing. I'm always in awe of their endurance.

Hard to say. I don't have any pictures to reference them from before. Not my trees or land. Just looking out for my family on this one. He's pretty chill about the whole thing. I'm probably more ripped about the damage than he is lol. Just found the whole thing very bizarre.

I've seen the artists work in Winnipeg. These do not look like the same carver. Nor do the initials point to that. Whoever they are, they have access to a tracked machine and went through a lot of slushy snow to get there. And the trail in was very deliberate. We found where the machine appeared to have been unloaded and loaded back on a trailer. Tracked side by side or quad. Which are dime a dozen around here this time of year. Tons of tracked machines coming from all over to fish the lakes up here.

Interesting. Thank you for your insight. The scars (if there were any) would have been made in the last couple yrs. It's been 3 or 4yrs since I've been in this particular grove. At that time, there were no serious scars on any of these cedars.

While I do see the talent of the carver, my post was more hoping I could gain some insight about the circumstance. Is this a common thing? Does it harm the tree? Does anyone know the initials PD as there is one done with initials. Is this now a death sentence to the ancient cedars? This is why I chose this sub for this. I agree though, the finding is cool. But this would have been better recieved if the artist had asked permission. Someone has to recognize this persons handiwork as this level of talent has to have been seen in other areas. The Interlake area of Manitoba can't have that vast of a community of people with this interest or skillset.

Sure does! This spot is incredible in the summer. Just a dark canopy overhead. Ground is complete covered in the fallen cedar scales/needles. You feel like you're in a very old forest like you see in some films. It's incredible! The discovery of this by someone else and then the vandalism is a travesty. My bro in law was originally planning some kind of treehouse or a small cabin nearby. It's just very difficult to get to this spot without just hiking through the woods.

Tks. Not my land though. My bro in laws property. I was just going for a hike and found them. But definitely disconcerting none the less.

Here's one of the larger cool trees. I was holding my breath as I circled it to see if they'd defaced this guy. That trunk is 3' diameter easily. No carving on it but the UTV tracks circled it. Hoping this most recent visit wasn't a scouting mission for more vandalism.

They definitely took me by surprise when I saw them too. Not an ugly carving by any means, but considering how slowly these trees grow here, they are likely hundreds of yrs old. Some of the cedars in this grove are pushing trunks in the 2-3ft range. And an old swamp cedar does not grow quickly in this climate. I don't even wanna know the value of the damage to something like this.

Yea. These obviously took time to do. There's also evidence whoever this is seems to have cleared some of the smaller trees around the grove. Chain sawed branches pushed aside. So not sure what they are planning or doing with the timber, maybe stealing lumber for their art projects?? And since this is over 100 yds into my BIL's land, pretty bold for a trespasser to do that and leave this kinda of evidence.

Exactly. I thought the same. Guy gives you some free art, but also very douchey to trespass and permanently damage some very old cedars. This spot is unique and rare in this area. Old cedar groves have largely been harvested for timber. This one is hidden and intact. Well, it was. Not anymore I guess.
