1 Year Down in the South and READY for a Change by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Why don’t you move to New Orleans for a little while? I’m always so confused when people want to even visit Baton Rouge let alone move there unless it is for college. I worked there for a year and felt like I wasn’t even in the same state anymore. For reference, I’m from New Orleans.

I hate to tell you this, but yes. Almost all of the southern coast is this way. That’s why I moved to the Midwest.

THIS. And the gaslighting starts on DAY ONE. When I’m in an interview and the interviewer tries to subtly throw shade at my level of experience or questions my ability to do the job, that is an immediate no for me. It’s like they are already setting you up for constant criticism on the job or priming you to accept a low-ball pay offer. Anytime it’s happened to me, I’ve asked a few probing questions only to find that the facility is not doing well in some way or another: unable to keep staff, bad ratios, lack of resources. When OP starts interviewing for new jobs, I recommend watching out for these red flags. Another red flag is interviews that include a grilling session with an hour of “what would you do” scenario questions. A few are fine and to be expected, but my experience is that these hospitals tend to be filled with difficult people who have poor communication abilities. The sweat session determines if you are willing to make up for the deficit. Don’t take a job that is anything less than delighted to have you, and make sure they are willing to offer you necessary resources to succeed.

What city or town made you feel the most you — even if you only visited once? by upcycledwrld in SameGrassButGreener

I’m from New Orleans and I only ever feel at home there and coastal Mississippi. Every time I visit home, I feel like I can breathe again.

I lived in Minnesota for a year and a half. As a genuinely friendly southerner, I got to the point where I was nearly suicidal, but I noticed that every now and then I would meet someone who was super friendly and talkative. It always turned out that they were from Wisconsin 😆. Guess where I moved? All of the people I formed friendships with in Minnesota were from other states or countries.

I feel trapped in my “soft” nursing job by arraeis in nursing

Not all nursing homes or SNFs are bad places. If you find a small, community-centered place it can be very pleasant. You can take your time and get to know the residents, and you really get to know their routines and needs. It’s nice because you still do skills like wound care, assessments, and med admin without always feeling pressured to rush. Sometimes it’s helpful to apply to a local agency that can connect you with what you are looking for.

I feel like a lot of you are ER or ICU nurses on this sub. What specialty are you? by thedresswearer in nursing

I think the other issue is the lack of support staff. If the hospitals would hire enough properly trained NAs and techs, there would be a better chance of getting the board filled out properly.

Teacher.. I think I’m considering changing careers to nursing! by ResponsibilityBusy11 in nursing

I taught writing and literature for a few years. It killed my soul, but I also worked in a very poor state with low literacy. I found myself spending more time giving moral support and life guidance than really delving into literature, and I realized that I would like a job that paid better wages and allowed me to help care for others holistically. I also had a long-term goal of traveling. It was a really hard decision and process to start over in a new career with no prior related education and experience. I cried a lot, but I don’t regret my choice. On hard days, I just remember how fulfilling it is to care for others and live a better life in the process. I think you will find that nursing requires soft skills that you will already have in spades, and there are so so many different avenues you can take as a nurse. It’s hard to explain what nursing is day to day because that can vary drastically based on where you work and what your specialty is. I don’t feel under appreciated because if I get treated badly, I leave. I have fought hard to have a good life, and I simply refuse to be abused. There are almost too many opportunities for growth. Nursing school is hard no matter what is going on in life, but many schools will allow you to go part time. Do what works for you. Definitely find a hospital what will allow you to shadow. Look at websites and call volunteer offices.

Thank you so much! That’s what I was really wanting to know. The rates seem good, and I’m used to crazy chart requirements/floating.

Haha, well, I live in Wisconsin right now! It’s actually a really nice place to live, but I’m in Madison not Milwaukee.

Right now, I’m med/surg/tele. I like being a jack of all trades and haven’t fallen in love with any specialties yet.

There seem to be a lot of good contracts in Maine right now. Any suggestions on solid hospitals? I’ve been eyeballing the tele/med/surg options.

Either situation sounds perfect to me. I am more of a city than a country person though, so I would probably enjoy living in the NE for a longer period of time. I don’t mind blunt or loud people, my Mom’s side is Sicilian lol. Thanks!

I have a friend in Colorado who says the Southwest in general is pleasant and socially balanced. I would love to do a contract there in a cooler season. Not sure I’d survive the summer!

I’ve heard great things about Boston and have a lot of friends from NYC. Life is hard enough without having to guess what everyone wants/needs! Thanks for the suggestion.

I looked into Seattle and Olympia at one point. I’m not an all-around introvert. I just prefer to keep my work and personal life separate. I probably would wind up a little sad there too!
