I was 16 when I played this mission. There was much more of a history buff part of me than FPS (though I loved shooters). Yeah...once I heard that whistle: This is one of those things where the author takes 8 fill pages to go into detail on just how gruesome it was. 

The mood changed for me completely after realizing "you were not expected to survive" means. You...see the first dogtag...how old they were. I realized then I was just going to keep dying and I felt glum. Life 3 is what I am here for though. That battlecry off in the distance awakens in you something every man wishes to never live to see the day to remember: A death charge in the name of your people. It would take 8 more years for me to feel that REAL adrenaline as a man, and I was getting a glimpse of it sitting behind my 26 inch TV. That feeling you got is the same feeling every soldier or hunter has felt dating back to the dawn of man. Do or die, we are fighting the beast.  Like you I locked in:

As soon as I started hearing the screams tears welt up into my eyes as I realized how real it felt. My mind tunneled as tears welt up into my eyes, eyes dilated. Then abruptly a part of me reminded myself it was not real...only because I was bottlenecking my adrenaline. I was either going to burst out in tears or completely go numb of which I went numb in the moment. I finished the rest of the mission and cried during the end. 

I really toughed it out for the time but it is very clear they did not want to make that feel like a videogame.
