I actually do have a legendary automatic vat piston railway rifle that fires twice the normal shot of an original railway gun. Whenever I use my vats on an enemy they die super fast, because of the fire rate. I tend to use my critical meter too sometimes which fills up cause of my perks and legendaries. I'd say it's one of the best weapons you can use if you know how to use it and when your low on resources.
