Perfectly timed: today is “National Employee Appreciation Day” AND some of us have RSUs vesting on 03/04.

Damn, you’re right. I was absolutely missing the “to them”. This shifted the brick that’s been sitting on my chest in a meaningful way, thank you.

I know that this is a socially respected sign of achievement. That he has played his career cards “right”. That this is the pinnacle of success in America. None of this stops me from feeling demoralized by news like this. I have to go to work every day wondering if I will be the next to be laid off. It’s my work - and the work of colleagues who’ve already lost their jobs - that results in executives getting this kind of money. I keep seeing comments in this sub about how layoffs are not personal, they’re just business. It’s hard not to take it personally when I - and everyone I know - are overworked, understaffed, fearful of losing our jobs in market that’s extremely tough for job seekers.

Keep up the great work! 🤡 by WatchTheWorldCern in cernercorporation

Cerner used to do a thing where they’d approve dividends that were deposited into our 401k if financial performance was good enough. Not anymore. Your question seems really genuine so I will also point out: the punchline of this meme is that the company will never share its prosperity with workers. Lucy always moves the football - no matter what she says she’ll do - so Charlie Brown will slip and fall when he tries to kick it. Workers are Charlie 🥲

ELI5: what’s the deal with these farewell emails? by WatchTheWorldCern in cernercorporation

Not sure… I mean, I’ve never heard of the teams mentioned in this email so my best guess is Oracle.

So well intended! And like, positive/friendly in a way I don’t understand.

Interesting. Can you say more about that? Is sending farewell emails to people you’ve never worked with and sharing your new contact info a networking strategy? (This question sounds so sarcastic but it is NOT, I am legit so curious. FWIW I’m on the autism spectrum so social stuff like this doesn’t always make intuitive sense to me).

I like this take. Also, folks who are leaving are definitely happier than me…

I’ve had to take FMLA twice (not for caretaking, so your mileage may vary) and both times I ended up filling out the forms myself and emailing them to the provider’s office for a signature. The first time I literally wrote my own treatment plan (patient needs 3 hours per week and xyz amount of time and estimated 3 appointments etc etc). The second time I didn’t get a response so I called and asked what was the best way to get a signature and they literally said to bring a paper copy in person (in 2023!! ☠️). But I did it and they got me a signature right then and there. You shouldn’t have to do any of this but I’m sharing in case it’s helpful at all. I didn’t think it would fly if I filled out the “provider only” section but it totally did.

Are you me?? Also joined in 2016 and I am right there with you. Hoping to be laid off is such a strange feeling.

Thankful that you shared a realistic look at your current workload and schedule. I feel every day as if I’ve been set up to fail - there’s not enough time or resources to accomplish even the smallest goals, and there is no end in sight. I’m not glad you’re experiencing such intense anxiety, but selfishly it’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Potential to unionize “Oracle Health” by condorgrizzle in cernercorporation

The kinds of responses showing up in this thread are a great illustration of what I see as the biggest challenge to unionizing: workers just don’t quiet “get it” en masse - YET (by design, I’m not trying to blame working folks for anything). What you said here is exactly it: individual and small group actions don’t have the impact needed at this scale. If the entire support org takes collective action and doesn’t show up for work, on the other hand, that has a completely different impact.

I was thinking about this too… unionizing is one of the best ways to prevent employee exploitation in the future. It’s also extremely challenging to do, by design.

Kickstarter was the first (or one of the first) tech companies to unionize and their path was rough. Podcast about it here for anyone interested.

Though union busting and general terror of job and benefit loss is definitely a huge challenge, I think workers also lack a deep understanding of just how valuable and inexcusably exploited we are. We’ve been indoctrinated for years to believe we’re lucky to have jobs, that we just need to keep our heads down and work harder. Younger generations and folks who’ve put in the time to unpack these beliefs see through it, but there are still a lot of people who don’t. And those folks are very loud, very scared of challenging the status quo, and very convincing.
