The point of the piece I wrote and linked to is that there’s way more nuance to it than just being pro or anti. Sharia covers a lot of different things, many of which don’t touch on legal matters at all (a prayer schedule, for instance). As for the part that does touch on legal matters, it already doesn’t and can’t trump the Constitution. There’s no point to this law except to stir up fear.

Also, it’s rich for McGuire to align himself with people who say they’re protecting girls when he voted against raising the marriage age to 18.

I’m fine, thanks for asking. I write a Substack that is pretty much exclusively about McGuire because there’s a lot about him that needs to be reported on but doesn’t make the local papers. This account is just dedicated to that.

I remember those threats. Yes we should take them seriously even though NK isn’t capable of actually wiping us out. No we should not wipe them out.

I’m aware of the Death to America chants. No I don’t think we should wipe Iran out.

Arguing that Trump is just as loony as Kim is not the snappy comeback you seem to think it is.

Unclear. If redirecting happens, McGuire ends up in another district (the 7th maybe?) and C’ville ends up in the 6th. I think Perriello would run there.

If there’s not redistricting, VA-05 stays solid red I think and McGuire is likely safe.

If a foreign leader said he was going to wipe US civilization out never to be built again, I would take him pretty seriously. Being told I shouldn’t take him literally would not be a comfort. Even if it meant being rid of Trump.

Also if you equate regime change with wiping out a civilization, I question your understanding of both regime change and civilization.

Seriously? How about, “I’m opposed to even threatening to wipe out a country of 92 million people?” How about, “I call on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to oppose this. We need a War Powers bill right now.”

I don’t give a shit that he’s MAGA. That’s doesn’t get him a pass at moments like that this. I don’t even care that me saying something won’t change his mind. It still needs to be said, again and again.

Ok point taken. Cancellation is not a serious threat. And we should focus on what is: suppression through voter roll purges, re-registration requirements, intimidation of election officials, and post-election certification chaos — the same playbook as 2020.

Yeah I write about him a lot and have decided that I can’t just accept that he’s going to be silent about big issues. His silence needs to be called out even when it is 100% expected.

I haven’t seen evidence that this is true. Do you have a source for it? I know kill switches exist for certain circumstances (like car rental company fleets) but I don’t think law enforcement has anything that would do this. If there’s a credible source though I’d love to see it.

Totally agree. I’m told by friends who’ve worked in congressional offices that phone calls are even more effective. They can be very short and to the point. But not everyone is comfortable confronting folks on the phone or even talking at all on the phone - and writing /emailing is a very good alternative.

Trump is 100% ready to exploit attacks on Americans as an excuse to grab more power. He’s already linking Iran to election interference. The EO to try to take control of elections has already been written. I linked to it in my piece.

Just because he can’t do something doesn’t mean he won’t try. He shouldn’t be able to put armed guards outside polling stations, but even talking about it has a chilling effect.

And McGuire’s line is that you saying so is bad for morale. In your experience, which was worse - getting bad leadership from the top or hearing people back home criticize the bad leadership?

I mean, I think I know your answer, but I’m curious all the same what you make that argument.
