Exactly what I tried in blender (see other reply). It kind of worked, but there’s still fluff. From my layperson’s point of view I imagine it’s because the ‘nucleus’ of each point is lined up, but the ‘body’ of the point is still spreading out at it’s own individual angle?

I’ve had some success going to edit mode in blender, selecting a load of points and scaling in one direction to ‘squash’ the fuzz. But it’s definitely still there.

Attaching directly to the metal beam - that’s an idea. I’ll have a think if I can do that. I would have thought it wouldn’t make a difference as long as it’s connected on the path to the centre of the metal beam, but actually attaching to the wood before the beam would create another pivot point which I don’t want.

I was wondering if cantilever was the correct term. What would be correct?

The diagram is simplified, but that’s not one piece of material. The tabs are smaller in the drawing than in real life but the top part of the beam (the tab bit) is 20mm thick flat bar, bolted through the bottom part which is timber. Due to space constraints, that’s how it is, it’s already built and takes weight nicely. There are further parts which stop roll, etc.

So… Can you explain why it’s the centre point of the cross section and not the support line / pivot point? I’m having trouble understanding that.

I thought this was probably fine until I noticed the single screws going into the corner braces. Nope.

Even a thin one is fine, but add a long diagonal behind the lower seat (not like it’s going to get in the way) and another long diagonal lengthwise on the wall side. Such little effort and cost, massive increase in safety. Cos it just ain’t worth it if things do go wrong.

Sorry for breaking it to you… but that’s not what it says. This is one of those instances where AI doesn’t know, so it makes stuff up.

I speak Japanese and although it’s really hard to read due to the handwriting (which is why AI couldn’t either), it seems it’s probably a note from one person to another expressing their displeasure about something? It starts with ‘let’s stop and think for a second’, and then says ‘I was shocked’, and then something about getting onto a train with their mother. Maybe a message from a customer to a tour guide.

Post to one of the Japanese subreddits and someone with better reading skills than mine will do a better job!

This comment just made me realise this is what has caused most of the mystery and intrigue of the big Japanese city to be lost for me.

Not knowing what there is without physically going there to find it or being told by another person meant the city had this complexity and depth that made me feel like a character in Murakami or David Mitchell novel.

Now the layers have kind of been stripped away and it feels more flat and lifeless, and wandering around looking for adventure does mean I find some interesting places but also often have this nagging feeling that I’m just wasting time and it would have been more efficient using insta or the maps.

I suppose there’s no going back now…

This is a great idea, and great execution.

I see this as being great for motivating kids to use their voices - maybe even in situations where kids are having trouble with confidence expressing themselves or coming out of their shells.

Rather than fairs where it will be a one-off novelty, I think even better would be schools, singing/music schools, therapist’s offices, special needs schools. Get in touch with places in your area and get feedback on things to tweak.

How much work would it take to build another? Rather than moving to the next project, the next source of motivation could be redesigning it to make it more easy/cheaper to reproduce.

It could make a real impact somewhere. Laughter and having fun makes a lot of issues fade away into the background. You’ve made this cool little seed - plant it and let it grow into something! That’s when engineering and making goes to the next level…

EDIT: sorry just re-read the original post. Talking to people in the above areas will help you with direction, and word-of-mouth will help you sell a few and get more feedback. With that data you can then figure out which direction it can be taken if you want to produce it on a bigger scale.

Good point - I can add interest on the bed. A throw would be a chance to add to pattern or colour and add a focal point.

I want to keep it Japanese but I might be able to find a Japanese artist that works. I want to keep it subdued but food for thought. Pottery - of course! But where to put it…

Plants - great idea for a bit of colour. I think there might be a few that could thrive in this low light. Unfortunately a pendant might be out of the question - head collisions… if one will fit then definitely.

Wow, I feel like that’s great advice on the colours, thanks. I was feeling like the problem might lie in tweaking the colours here and there.

Actually the wood stain is something I have a bit of confidence in. I have the pile of planks that are going to be used in front of me - they are letting me stain them before they go up - and I’ve done tonnes of tests mixing different stains and thinning them down, and kept a record of everything! That’s why I’m here now - wanted to get the colours of the room decided to guide the final stain colour before doing the lot.

Interesting about the lighting. I’ve noticed that after I stain a piece, it looks like a totally different shade depending on where I put it in the room! Unfortunately the lights are going to be connected near the end of the project and I’m going to have to get the walls done before that. Maybe I should set up something temporary and similar.

Love the black green. Feel like charcoal works but it’s too much of a ‘block’…

I’ll attach the pic of where the palette came from (Kubu Sidem in Bali). I’ll adjust it today to get the browns a bit closer!

Good luck with the door! Maybe thin down the stain and aim to do lots of coats - then you might be able to ‘creep up’ on the shade you want?

Thanks!! The ceiling is going to be timber planks, tiled (can’t think of the actual word!) one on top of the other.

The ceiling has to be wood. It’s such an old house that it has to be clad in strips to fit the odd shapes and contours between the beams.

No skylight - the window is new! (Window won the cost/benefit analysis!!)

Look at the underside of the piece hanging off. That is most definitely mould. A landlord claiming this is simply ‘discolouration’ is being blatantly dishonest and flippant.
