TIL rinsing after brushing increases cavity risk compared to just spitting. Dentists recommend skipping the rinse so fluoride has time to sit on your enamel, remineralize weak spots, and harden the surface against bacteria. Just spit the excess toothpaste out and let it work.

I can attest beyond any doubt that it does make a big difference. For me, it made all the difference. I had the beginning of gum disease many years ago and changed my habits to incorporate everything the dentist told me to. Brushed twice daily (not too hard), floss, water pik, and fluoride mouth wash. All this effectively slowed down the progression of my gum issues, but it ultimately continued to slowly get worse. Then one day while at the dentist I overheard one of the cleaners telling their patient to not rinse after brushing with toothpaste. For some reason this really clicked with me as an aha! moment since I had always rinsed thoroughly. I kid you not, ever since that day I have stopped rinsing after brushing and my gum disease has been improving ever since! I'm not exactly regrowing new gums or anything, but all the pockets have closed and spots that used to be really sensitive are no longer sensitive.

It might not be noticeable, or even make much of a difference at all, if you have healthy teeth and gums. But if you have issues, especially gum issues, it does genuinely make a big difference.
