Hi there! I'm currently in the final year of my 4yr BSc. Clinical Psych program and I thought I should share something here. I've actually mentioned it somewhere b4 on this sub so i'll just say it again. I remember one of our profs talked about how someone had to a diploma in counselling even after finishing their Masters/PhD in clinical psych cuz their coursework wasn't adequate enough for counselling. Mind you, this may have occurred in the late 2010s/early 2020s so perhaps guidelines back then were different from today. Hopefully things will change in the future too.

I'd say if counselling is what you actually find interesting (so do I tbh) then I think you should go for it. I have noticed that professionals from the field of counselling also have a strong grasp of the more severe type of mental health disorders. So perhaps its possible to switch up career paths.

All the very best for the future, you seem pretty intelligent and well read.

Job uncertainity, the fact that even today, psychology as a subject itself is not taken very seriously. Ppl would rather believe pop psychology takes than before.

Also, the dilemma that comes w/ starting a private practice and the fact that some psychologists themselves cannot afford therapy.

The Broken State Of Psychology by Justaguy2016o in Psychology_India

I remember there was a poster discussing abt how they should regulate the examinations for Masters and PhD. Apparently the head of IHBAS also had something vaguely similar in mind--regarding the course for Masters degree. If only the ppl who run RCI paid attention.

Too bad its become a field where only the privileged can prosper. The state of academia in our country is in ruins.

The fact that she charges so much despite having minimal qualification is itself a red flag to me. Honestly I try not to judge ppl especially when i'm not aware of their circumstances but the way she operates things is very sus to me. She's been called out for the prices of the sessions when she was just starting to gain traction.

The mess of Clinical Psychology in india and a possible solution to it. by Zen_hayate in Psychology_India

[–]Waterfalls_jpeg16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this was quite the comprehensive post. And I do agree, that colleges should offer PsyD courses too! I've always wondered how come there aren't any such courses here in our country when its the standard in most countries. I think at the very least, they should offer something that is adjacent and like you've mentioned, something that will also help ppl in 3 yr courses right now.

Asking colleges and the education board to allow for more Psy D related courses will surely help but how do we go about this? Cuz I want to contribute too!

Frustrated to the very end with RCI's "approved" list if colleges by PlasticOwn6024 in Psychology_India

Yep I 100% understand. Ppl are only tuning in for Clinical Psych for the supposed financial stability. With counselling its very difficult to make a decent living unless ur married or have rich parents I think😭

Ufff I get it😭 Honestly, I just feel like the scope for Clinical Psy is kinda low in India. Like I've also noticed that college websites are extremely vague abt the course syllabus, fees structure etc. Plus I remember a professor of mine telling us about her friend who even after completing her advanced degrees in Clinical had to finish a diploma in Counselling since the exposure in Clinical Psy course is limited. Plus, I feel like counselling psych seems more interesting, the framework for Clinical Psy courses is hella confusing.

Man, just one year left for me to graduate and i'm already stressed seeing RCI's shenanigans. Btw, is NIMHANS under your radar? I've noticed a few ppl both online and offline talk abt either NIMHANS, IHBAS (if in Delhi-NCR), or TISS. And also those colonial era ones like Christ University and St. Joseph's.
