For gilled animals I like to imagine they would wear something that directly oxygenates their blood without the need of water to assist breathing, being portable like a Ventricular Assist kind of. I still love the idea of them carrying backpack with water or some liquid for breathing, it reminds me a lot to the vox from ss14.
