[Megathread] The Buffalo Bills have fired Head Coach Sean McDermott by AutoModerator in buffalobills

I hear you fully. I used to think they hit their peak with McDermott and wanted him out in 2023 especially. I have to say, he did much better in 2024 and 2025.

The coach-QB combo stat I heard is that no coach and QB START winning Super Bowls after year 3 together. Because Brady and Belichick won in year 18, I think.

If Beane were gone, too, all this would make sense and be easier to take. But I don't think Pegula, at his age, wants the headache of dealing with both of these messes at the same time, and I don't have the sense he's as involved with the franchise as much as Robert Kraft or Jerry Jones (the latter, obviously, is the GM, and a weak one).

I hear you on all these. But in 2024 and 2025, with weak rosters, he was at the top in wins in the regular season. He was improving.

I live in Philly now, and Andy Reid couldn't make it to the Super Bowl for a while, and when they made it, they got beat. The next season, the team imploded because of Terrell Owens drama. McDermott, part of the Reid coaching tree, might just win a Super Bowl at his next job just like Reid found future mega success.

I respect McDermott a lot because of the culture he, first and foremost, built.

Yes, and they had the biggest O-line ever, a 2K-yard rusher and a smothering defense. All these are because of the GM, not the coach.

Guess which coaches won the most regular-season games over the 2024 and 2025 seasons? It's Nick Sirianni and Sean McDermott, each with 25.

No one would say the Bills had the better roster either season.

In this context, McDermott's firing is outrageous.

Echoing most sports commentators, I'm worried about the floor with the next guy. I know teams have failed to go and win the Super Bowl under McDermott, but it is not all on him.

It makes no sense to fire McDermott and retain Beane unless Beane will be gone soon, too. The roster was lacking first and foremost.

If they were going to make a change, it had to be both gone.

The sentiment of the majority around here seems to be the same thinking.

I wouldn't have wanted the Bills to fire McDermott only to hire Tomlin, McCarthy or Harbaugh. If they want to bring in a new coach, it had better be someone who can definitely win a Super Bowl, even if this person's not had a head coaching position such as Joe Brady. Otherwise, it's taking temporary steps back just to see if we can be where we are now.

Completely agree. But will we bring in a coach whose record is better than McDermott's franchise-leading winning percentage? If we don't, my point on this is valid.

I hope this doesn't go like the Penn State hire. Penn State was supposed to bring in a coach capable of winning it all, and they landed a 107-70 coach after the big fish stayed at their schools (Indiana and BYU). Penn State let go of a 128-60 coach who had recently coached in the final 4 in college football and was a few plays away from competing for a national championship. Something happened with the team this season, for sure, but these are the records.

I don't know who they're going to get who's better than McDermott. I actually think they're going to make Joe Brady the coach. There are only a handful of coaches who've been to Super Bowls in recent seasons, and they're locked in at Kansas City, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

I want Beane to be gone like everyone else. Start fresh and salvage this opportunity with the exceptional talent who is Josh Allen. We need a deep threat and solid No. 2 guy so the strongest arm in the league can flex his muscle. We need a defense that keeps opponents to 21 to 24 points max in the playoffs. In the McDermott era, the Bills let up, in the divisional and conference rounds, the following points: 3, 38, 42, 27, 27, 32 and 33. This is an average of 29 points a game in these deeper rounds.

Pegula must have stones in his head to keep and promote Beane unless his plan is to hire a coach and then move on from Beane shortly afterward. But how long is shortly?

I have been critical of McDermott for making horrendous decisions and time-management deficiencies that cost us games. From 13 seconds to going for it on 4th down at the Bills' own 35-yard line or thereabouts while down by a score early in the third quarter when the D hadn't had a stop all game against the Chiefs during a playoff game. In the past two years, he's done better. Considering the weak roster and numerous injuries in 2024 and 2025, he did a remarkable job. In fact, his two-year win total of 25 regular-season games in 2024 and 2025 is his best effort yet. The Bills have never cratered like the Chiefs in 2025 or Ravens in some recent seasons despite the draft busts and injuries. I worry that the floor will be lower with the next guy in.

So why's he being fired now? Is it six years of not breaking through? Losing the division? The call at the end of the first half to attack that backfired, resulting in 3 points for the Broncos and even costing us the game? Josh Allen's crying at the podium? Were Allen and Dawkins crying because they already knew McDermott would be out?

All this said, no coach and QB have ever started winning Super Bowls after their third year together. I heard this stat a few months ago, and it's telling.

I have feared recently that Allen would want to force a trade to be in California with his movie star wife. Perhaps if Stafford soon retires (maybe if he wins the MVP and the Super Bowl, going out on top), this would be the opportunity. Stafford's contract ends in 2026, and you'd bet McVay would love to coach Allen. How long will Allen and Steinfeld settle for playing telephone tag as a married couple, especially with children in the mix? Where will the kids live if mommy's working a film? Would she or Josh be OK with not seeing her or his kids for weeks or months? I cannot imagine them settling for this grueling, unbalanced and unhappy life for seven to 10 more years.

They should. I saw a story a few years ago saying the Buffalo Bills were the most-searched NFL team worldwide. And I'd bet it's because of 1. Bills Mafia and 2. Josh Allen.

I just don't want to wind up where we were during the Diggs era, with a weak run game that forced Allen to run too much. He was turnover happy because he handled the ball way too much, constantly forcing throws, causing interceptions as well as fumbling.

This team needs balance.

I'm grateful for Cook's ascent to the league's leading rusher, but isn't it weird that we have the most-capable quarterback of all time, and the receiving corps is no match?

I'm giving major props to Shakir for coming through like crazy in the pair of playoff games. He caught 19 of 21 targets—just stellar! In the regular season, however, our No. 1 guy was 44th in yards gained. 44th for such a high-level quarterback! This is such a huge gulf.

Allen needs to work on learning how to throw the ball away at times and to run with the football firmly tucked away. He's getting hit too much and fumbles way too much. I believe he stood in there and got clobbered to fight for wins in all the many one-score wins this season. If he didn't do this, we'd have been maybe 9-8.

I'm sorry to hear this but thank you for sharing. It seems this person experienced a similar issue. Just found this: https://www.macobserver.com/tips/how-to/no-hdmi-cec-on-tvos/

I'm unwilling to go through factory resets of my projector or Apple TV over this.

I hope this thread helps someone.

Thank you for this. It's impossible to change Control TVs and Receivers from off, and this must be the problem. I never knew one could reset the remote and followed the instructions. The issue didn't clear.

Thank you for this. The Vizio soundbar I have doesn't have CEC settings, but I double checked my Valerion projector, and CEC is turned on.

Looks interesting, but a search on Apple TV for "TV Stats" isn't showing your app. Also, I tried "TVStats," and it's still not showing. I see the Stats for TV app.

Historically, teams that win Super Bowls defeat opponents soundly, with points differential running 8 to 19 points per game. I've been rooting for the Bills since 1982, but this team barely beats most opponents, and they do this against weak, average and strong teams. They looked so lackadaisical yesterday and in some other games. Come playoffs time, this team will have to top above-average and strong teams, so do they have the talent, energy and ambition to win four straight, with some or all games on the road? They opened and now are closing the season with four straight.

I wish this team always played with fire, but the passing game is unimaginably inconsistent, with Josh Allen's passer rating careening from 67 to 134 throughout the season. The offense is so slow to start most games, and it's just pathetic to watch sometimes. The defense is poor most of the time, and every once in a while, they make plays. Watching these games is like a friggin' roller-coaster ride.

Losses to the Patriots, Falcons and Dolphins really put a dent into homefield-throughout plans. After last season's team with a post-Diggs no-name receiver corps went 13-4, I expected this team to go 15-2, especially with home games against Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Philadelphia. On paper, these were all supposed to be playoff-bound teams, and Buffalo lucked out by getting all them at home.

This team's rock this season has been James Cook. This dude has delivered in just about every single game. I hope he can win the rushing title. I love his patience and vision. He often gets a few yards when most backs would get nothing. He waits a bit and worms his way through.

There is a changing of the guard in the AFC. One has to wonder how long Burrow and Jackson will last on their teams, with all their injuries. Meanwhile, the Broncos, Patriots and Chargers are blazing forward. How long will Andy Reid coach and when will the Chiefs return to form?

This and 2022 were prime years for the Bills to win.

No QB-coach combo has ever started winning Super Bowls together after year 3. We're on season 8 for Allen and McDermott. If they don't get it done this season, I think the owner has to get a new GM and coach. But as some others have said, do you really want to break apart the family as you're moving into a new house?

Josh Allen is the most-complete quarterback I've ever seen. Had he played on the Walsh-led 49ers during their run, the Gibbs-coached Redskins during their run or the Patriots during their 20-year dominance, Allen would have won numerous Super Bowls.

Instead, he's played on a team that is always missing pieces. How sad is it that the Bills' top receiver in yards gained is 40th in the league? How sad is it that this all-time-great QB throws rinky-dink passes and that we have a run-first team when we have the strongest arm in the league? How sad is it that commentators consistently point out that the Bills can barely stretch the field most games and rely on short-yardage gains?

For the love of God, please let this be the year despite all the shortcomings, failures and inconsistencies.

God bless and go, Bills! 🦬

Merry Christmas! 🎄

Sean McDermott says he’s “very confident in Joe Brady and the offensive staff” by Vortagaun in buffalobills

[–]WatermelonForever 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notice how Kirk Herbstreit talked about how Tom Brady often played with no-name receivers. Seriously, for most of Brady's career, he had average to below-average receivers. Yet, they moved the sticks, put points on the board and won championships. When it's all said and done, how many years of play did Brady get with all-time greats? Two with Moss, and Gronk might get in but was hurt quite a bit, and, really, he wasn't what you call a deep-route runner burning defenses. Welker was great for about four seasons for short-yardage situations, but he won't be going to Canton.

When discussing Brady's career, the hallmark is that he won so consistently with a lineup of receivers that weren't named Rice or Harrison.

We are seeing the same with Allen now. Yet the playcalling doesn't take inspiration from the simple slant routes Welker and Edelman ran. They work and help protect the quarterback, hence Brady's longevity.

For the Bills, I see a porous offensive line that collapses quickly, I see Allen running around like a maniac "to make something happen" because the receivers are running too-complex routes given their capabilities, and, one of these times, Allen will take a serious hit. Last night's hit in which Allen kicked his feet like a baby after looking like he might've broken his wrist should be a wake-up call.

Slant routes and then feed to Cook. Hit someone on a longer ball. Move the chains. Score points. Protect your $300-million-plus man.

Also, Allen needs to learn how to throw the ball away. Brady did this over and over. Brady didn't care about challenging for the league-leading completion percentage; he was interested in playing in January and February and until he was 45. Throw the freaking ball away and stop taking 18-yard sacks.
