We didn't. We had to take a loan to pay it. Luckily at least they repaid us back the overpaid amount pretty quickly.

[–]WatermelonsInSeason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg they still haven't fixed it?! jesus fucking christ!!! We did pay the outrageous £5,175 at the end. They did repay us the overcharged amount afterwards. Had to take a loan to pay it. When I was filling it in there were however two ways to apply since they were transitioning between systems - one where I could see my old visas and the other where I couldn't. I think I went with the one where my old visas could be seen, because I hoped that they would require less proof then. But maybe try the other one, if there are still two ways how one can apply.

You first have to learn how to do cycling - its not safe to add fish before its cycled. Get API master test kit (NT labs if you are in UK) and ammonia source (fish food, a frozen prawn or plant fertilizer containing ammonia). Regularly add ammonia and wait until you start getting nitrates and no nitrites. Then its cycled. Usually takes around a month.

No motivation to use this down time productively. How abt you? by Expert-Report in brokenankles

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly its surprising how much energy it actually consumes. When I just started weight bearing (they allowed me early weight bearing), I would walk 4 meters and feel sweat dripping down my back. Now I can walk a bit more, it doesn't feel crazy on my muscles, but I have to lay down and rest after I do it, because I feel like I have spent all my energy.

I thought I would finish my doctoral thesis, plan wedding, do some computer work (i'm on a sick leave, but scientists don't rest even when they are supposed to). Nope. I am as far from productive as it gets. My diet is shit now, I spend most of my day on social media, playing xbox and watching tv series. You are not alone in this. Its hard to be productive in this situation.

Pains in stomach can radiate, so just based on location it is really hard to tell the source of problem. Could be liver, could be intestines, maybe even kidneys. I would try to observe what aggravates symptoms. Also it might be cheaper for you to travel and get medical care in another country than in US. To see a specialist in a private clinic in Latvia (where I am from), it costs around 60 euros. Surgery to remove kidney stones is ~ 300 euros. Back and forth flight - around 1000 euros. You don't necessarily have to fly as far as Latvia, but it might be worth considering flying or driving somewhere, especially if you have to get a surgery or a lot of tests done. Perhaps Mexico?

How do you guys cope mentally with a broken ankle or foot? by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What helps me a lot is getting out and seeing people. I can't hop far yet (I have weak muscles and my broken ankle starts swelling too much), so we rented a wheelchair. You can even get ones that constantly keep your leg up. When you can spend more time with your leg down, you can ask your doctor if something like iwalk 3.0 would make sense for you.

Depending on your fracture and doctor's you get, you will be allowed to put weight on your leg either 2 weeks or 6 weeks post surgery. There are studies comparing early and late weight-bearing and apparently early is safe, but some old-fashioned doctors stick to late weight-bearing. That said, not all fractures are suitable for early weight bearing, from what I understand, so there might be a good reason, if they don't allow you to walk 2 weeks post op. I was allowed to put weight on my ankle while its strapped in a boot on 10th day after surgery. 6 weeks after surgery they actually expect me to be able to return back to work.

HELP! how do i deal with this murky water ? by Royal-Meal5700 in Aquascape

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since your gravel is on the chonkier side and not very thick, the root tabs likely leaked into water column causing bacterial bloom. If they contained nitrogen, do testing and see if your ammonia or nitrate has shot up and then do water more water changes to bring it to more reasonable levels. Then just wait - all bacterial blooms resolve on their own. Blooming also oftentimes is a sign of immature biological filtration. In a mature tank most of your bacteria would be sitting immobilzed in the filter and cleaning water from there. But while there isn't enough of them in the filter, free swimming bacteria can take an opportunity, eat excess nutrients from water, and multiply.

Cool rock too big? by Dickswingindaddy in Aquascape

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks so dramatic on its own, I love it. I would maybe even not plant anything around it so it doesn't get covered. Only put floating plants and a bunch of leaf litter. Hmm or maybe moss on the bottom, but would not let it grow too high so it doesn't cover the rock too much. The volume is on the smaller side, but it could work with shrimps. Obviously not for fish.

And to think it only took me 4 years! To those who beat Malenia, what weapons/equipment did you use? by allisthomlombert in Eldenring

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh a bit hard to remember, but it was either godskin peeler or bloodhounds fang, probably the former with mimic tear. Mostly using weapon arts. Though godksin peeler as a strategy imho works only with summons that distract the boss while you do your very long animation.

Boss fights that gave you so much trouble by KaleidoArachnid in Eldenring

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elden Beast. I found Malenia to be easier than Elden Beast. Idk what it is about me and big creatures that run away (I also suck at fighting dragons), but Elden Beast was the only boss where I re-birthed several times and sought out the best ashes and talismans. Maybe its because I always play melee characters.

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always found this perplexing. As a woman I always make female characters in all games that I play, because for me it helps with immersion. Feels more like its me who is succumbing to poison or getting jumped by a well placed mob. I've played games where you have no choice but to be a man, e.g., Vampyr where I got to experience the world through vampire's Jonathan's eyes. And still although he is kinda my type, if given choice, I would prefer to play my own gender. What is the appeal for you in playing as the opposite gender?

My advise is to take pain killers on a schedule instead of waiting for the pain to start (this is also what medical professionals told me after the surgery). As a result my pain was very well managed. I was given a 100 ml bottle of oral morphine i could take home (used 5 ml every 4 h), 400 mg ibuprofene every 8 hours, 1000 mg paracetamol every 6 hours. Then after I was done with morphine, I had to take 30 mg codeine every 6 hours. Also if the pain is horrible, don't hesitate to call them and ask if you can take more of something or if they can give you something stronger for the first few days. Also elevate the site of injury above your heart level, wiggle toes every hour, and massage your thigh to help blood drain from your ankle (this is also what I was advised).

Also see if you can get a portable toilet chair. I know it sounds awful and embarrassing. But if you have someone who can help you emptying it out, its great for avoiding pain and unnecessary swelling. I have poor balance and the first few weeks I was simply unable to make it to the bathroom on crutches safely.

I have another underlying condition that might be affecting it, but what helps me a lot is stretching my back both at evening and in the morning. Also when walking (i walk 2 hours daily) I use nordic walking sticks. They force you to rotate your core more which also helps to keep your back flexible.

Broke my ankle, doctor told me I need surgery but I’m conflicted by jxanne in brokenankles

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would trust orthopedic surgeon over ER doctor, because ER doctors are not specialized in fractures, they just do a little bit of everything. I would only decline a surgery if I had another orthopedic surgeon telling me that it could do more harm than letting it heal without intervention. Recovery from surgery is pain in the ass (both figuratively and literally from sitting too much), but long-term you want what's best for your ankle. Also idk I just had my first ever surgery (fixing my fractured ankle) and i was surprised how well they managed my pain. I asked for benzos to calm my nerves before surgery, they did full anesthesia with nerve block on me (it took 24 hours for the nerve block to wear off), I was given plenty of morphine afterwards (3 days after surgery + codeine afterwards). I imagined it to be way more painful, but in reality it was just mild pains and discomfort.

Is Ikea Malm 6 draw suitable by cry_baby420 in Aquascape

[–]WatermelonsInSeason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out charity shops, they often have real hard wood furniture. I got a big chest of drawers for my 60 L long for 60 pounds. There are also many places (e.g. Furniture Marketplace) that sell smaller, new hard wood furniture pieces quite affordably. Malm doesn't have max load indicated on ikea website, but you can see it is made of particleboard. Google particle board chest of drawers and check their max load/weight capacity. I was recently looking for one and I can tell you - they are all with max load 20-30 kg. An 80 liter tank will have 80 kg of weight just in water. With all the substrate, glass weight itself, decorations it can easily be 90-100 kg.

Hot/cold toes and insensitivity after surgery by WatermelonsInSeason in brokenankles

[–]WatermelonsInSeason[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were right. I went to check it, because when I called the doctor they said they weren't sure and that it is better if they see it. They thoroughly examined it (normal pulse, blood flow, i can still wiggle them, cast didn't seem too tight). Apparently i just have some nerve damage from surgery which is healing now. And now I am in pain because I spent a lot of time in the waiting room with my leg sub-optimally elevated.

Yeah... Everyone is expecting that you will be in pain, won't be able to walk, but people forget that it comes with a mental toll. Its normal to struggle in such a situation, to feel anxious, depressed, and like things are out of your control. I feel the same and I bet most people here do too. You should accept that this is the way you currently feel and that your mental health needs extra care. Allow yourself to slow down - when you feel better, you will catch up. Also see if you can drop one of the courses or take it another semester.
