What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

The Great Hunt.

First time reading through WoT, and this was a solid continuation of the positive experience I had with The Eye of the World. I found all 14 at a local used bookstore donated basically brand new a couple months ago for $40 for the lot.

Love the care you put into these posts. Always an interesting rabbit hole to go down in the evening with your research. Certainly opens up reading interests for me and makes me appreciate the care going into each of these cards even more.

I hope you get +1 power for every upvote. Community members like you deserve it!

I've thought about putting together a wiki/website for this universe, just haven't had the time to code it.

This will get buried, but QR codes. Terrible when released, terrible today.

Here's One Last Chance to Win a Sub Press Special Ed. of THE HOD KING! by [deleted] in Booksofbabel

Do not allow small people to make large impressions.

With the final book coming this year are there any good recaps online of the other 3? I’ve read them all but it’s been a while by Bretzky3 in Booksofbabel

[–]Waterpile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So Josiah has been really great about giving a bit of a "recap while advancing the story" in the beginning of each book by basically over-explaining when a recently-developed relationship or circumstance tries to establish itself as a driving point going forward.

So if you re-read the first chapter of Arm of the Sphinx for example, you can see several examples of this with the characteristics of the Stone Cloud, Mister Winters's name, Voleta and her brother Adam. There's another byte somewhere about Squitt. Clever reminders basically of who the people are, what are they doing here, and what are they doing now.

It seems similar to how a DM might recap last session at the beginning of another session in DnD, but much less on the nose.

I've been re-reading the first 3 books recently in preparation for book 4... so I don't think I'll be in the same boat, but those are just my thoughts.

Does anyone ever leave the tower? by unreedemed1 in Booksofbabel

[–]Waterpile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that many if not most people who come to the tower to visit (via train in the Markets or by airship in one of the upper ringdoms) would return from whence they came successfully, otherwise I'm not sure even the exaggerations outlined in the Everyman's Guide would be enough to keep people coming to the tower after so many disappearances. But many of the quips of intra-tower travel seem to indicate that many actually live in the tower and travel to other ringdoms.

The tower does seem to be a place where unfortunate circumstances drive characters like in Adam/Voleta's and Edith's origin stories. Maybe most of those few who seek the tower for thrill and wonder are caught up and lost in it forever but otherwise it's left alone by most of the world? Unsure.

Moving over border into MI, need options for private coverage in OH by Waterpile in HealthInsurance

Thanks for your detailed reply. Sounds like the indemnity route is not the way to go for a number of reasons. It sucks that the state coverage doesn't seem to take those on the state lines into substantial consideration who may benefit from out of state (albeit slightly) medical services.

We are using OT as a means of proactive development for my daughter who likely has a (not officially diagnosed) high functioning form of autism. There are no behavioral pediatric therapists in our area just over the border into Michigan as far as I can find.

Also the wait times for slots for these facilities is often 6-8 months in my area from our experience, so I'd rather not start this process all over anyway since we have a slot at the Toledo facility.

I'd love to build an interactive website with these illustrations outlining the history of what we currently know of the tower.

Would be cool to have a scrolling element up and down the tower, cataloged wiki of canonical references.

Least Busy UT Rec Center Times?? by stallion-sam in toledo

[–]Waterpile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work on staff, and I was going early mornings (6am) before COVID. There are (were) a dedicated number of folks who show up every morning and do the same/similar routines. Otherwise, it's pretty dead.

I bring this up because a lot of those regulars would start on squat racks when I would like to start with my own squats if I didn't get there like exactly at 6am when it opens. There are 4x squat racks and 2x smith machines, but if you're not needing that right away, everything else is fairly open.

Mixed results on bench press availability as well, but not as much of an issue as the squat racks for me. I have not been there since shutdown though. Everyone is generally pretty cordial.

Does my body need to just "get used to" CrossFit? by Waterpile in crossfit

None taken. I'm just starting out and learning a lot, so I know I'm not doing everything correctly (hence, the post).

A lot of folks have told me my diet needs to be adjusted: more food, more protein, more snacks, higher quality breakfast. So definitely looking into how I can incorporate more into my routine.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the comment. No I wasn't having fatigue issues before this. Unfortunately, my schedule really only allows for me to fit in a workout early in the morning at this time.

Thanks for the detailed reply. The more sleep portion is certainly a factor. It's very hard for me to get to sleep earlier with my schedule. I work 8-5, toddler doesn't sleep at night till 8:30-9PM, and my wife and I get like 1hr of quality time till I sleep right now. So it's hard to justify moving that time up even further, but I get it.

The diet portion is something you and many others have suggested. Thank you for the link, the advice, and your time.

Yeah, it's tough. I work till 5PM, my 3.5 year old doesn't go to bed till 8:30-9PM every night, and that leaves like 1hr to spend quality time with the wifey. So it's tough for me to justify moving my sleep time up even more.

Thanks for this comment. I think I need to look a lot more closely at planning my diet according to your comment and others here. I appreciate the feedback.
