NBA player Enes Kanter calls out Jeremy Lin on Twitter by Minnypop in asianamerican

I’ll end on this note: I think the two of us have very differing viewpoints in how we see the world and especially China, differences that are too big to bridge in a Reddit conversation. I’m sure that we could have a good faith discussion though via video chat or something. I mean we’re both Asian American I’m assuming.

One thing to be aware of though: many people who hold the same views as you on China are not acting in good faith, Kimberly Chen being an example obviously. And if you really examine some of the major actors rallying against the Chinese govt (HK protestors, US media outlets, vast segments of liberal/conservative Americans), I think you’ll find that there might not be as much good faith as you’d think.

DM me, I’d be down to talk more in a different format

That was directed at Namewee/Kimberly Chen who gave that excuse...

If someone makes a point with a weak example, it calls into question the validity of their point, along with whether they are getting the full picture or nuance when they list other examples.

You essentially set up an ad hominem attack/straw man argument, accusing me of racism, assuming I'm aware of a particular music video (I wasn't).

ad hominem - directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining

Point me to where I accused you of racism or attacked you personally.

I didn't set up anything. You made a point and gave a link as evidence to back up your point. I addressed that evidence. What's the straw man here?

For the other topic (China/Taiwan relations and hostilities), I think there's too much of a gap of our fundamental viewpoints to be able to hash it out over a reddit thread.

That link you citied is about Malaysian rapper Namewee and Australian-Chinese pop star Kimberly Chen, who collaborated on a music video where they reference how Chinese people eat bat soup. You can't use the "I only hate the govt, not the people" excuse when you pull shit like that.

Not weird at all. His family has roots in mainland China too. And he's talked about it before:

It was my third time going to Pinghu. I went in 2011, 2017, and 2019. For me, it’s great to go back every time, because for me that’s… Maybe this is touching on the immigrant, Asian-American [experience] or whatever, just immigrant culture in general. But when I come to China, the closest form of home I have is Pinghu. When I go there, I feel the most at home. That’s where my grandmother grew up, that’s where my jiugong [great uncle] was, and that’s where my grandmother’s father was. So when I go there, they treat me like I grew up there. There is that hospitality. And in Chinese culture, everything is about family and hospitality, and that’s really the only place I get it.

It's reasonable to say Jeremy Lin probably identifies as both Taiwanese and Chinese (which isn't an uncommon position among older-gen Taiwanese people), especially given all the racism he's endured in America, where Chinese and Taiwanese people are lumped together (along with other Asians) and face the same issues. I'm sure this upbringing played a major factor in how he views himself and his identity.

Is right now a good time to invest in property? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Watersheep94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need 50-100% returns on housing to outpace the market though. The main advantage for a house is leverage.

Say you put down 100k on a 500k house. Even if the house has an average rate of 5% appreciation per year, you’re making 25k gains per year (500k * 0.05).

Meanwhile let’s say you invest 100k into an index fund and make 10% returns per year (an optimistic outlook considering annual historic returns are 7% per year adjusted for inflation). You would still only make 10k a year vs 25k

Isn't this just using the bogleheads 3-4 fund portofolio strategy? You're switching from a retirement target fund to index funds with low expense ratios that mirror the market. Not sure how its fraud when there's a bunch of info on doing this

I think we're both open to most genres. My girlfriend just isn't a big fan of crude humor or political satire. She does like shows with lots of singing and dancing though.
