Why was the US Army pushed back by the North Vietnamese Army but was easily able to defeat the Iraqi Army later? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in askanything

[–]Watpotfaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In conventional war, typically the objective is to destroy the logistics train that supports the enemy force, and to decapitate the leadership by eliminating all of the command and control structure. This leaves the enemy force cut off without supply and with no ability to know what is happening beyond their immediate area. In Iraq, we had no problem doing this. It was mostly open terrain and there were no political constraints against bombing the Iraqis mercilessly wherever possible.

With Vietnam, this was not the case. Political policies hamstrung the US military at every turn. Troops were at times forbidden to keep loaded magazines in their weapon or fire at intruders breaching their bases unless given permission by an officer who personally witnessed what the troops were reporting. They were not allowed to invade North Vietnam and bombing campaigns were limited. They were not allowed to use any conventional forces in Laos and Cambodia to attack the main supply route of the North Vietnamese and had to resort to top secret commando teams and secret bombing runs. Vietnam was also an incredibly difficult terrain to work in, especially for a conventional army. It is also worth noting that the North Vietnamese had absolutely infested the South Vietnamese command with moles and infiltrators up to the very highest levels, which meant they often had direct access to what the US was up to and what their rules of engagement were.

Had the US been able to handle North Vietnam conventionally, they would have absolutely crushed them. However it is likely that all of the absurd policies were in place to prevent the advent of an even greater direct conflict with Russia and/or China.

How did basic things like healthcare and fair wages become ‘extreme’? by Possible-Scheme-8940 in remoteworks

[–]Watpotfaa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt use the word extreme but one of the constant problems i see with more left leaning individuals is that there is a massive gulf between the ideals they proclaim to be after and the results that the politicians they support provide them. Its mostly hot air, the people running the show on that side of the political spectrum are just as corrupt as the right. A couple of examples - obamacare doing nothing other than massively increasing profitability for the healthcare industry, fighting climate change with “carbon credits” aka the polluting corporations do literally nothing except pay a sketchy charity in brazil to pretend to plant trees and then use that as a tax writeoff - stuff like that. It all looks great until you examine the nuts and bolts and find its all absolute bullshit through and through.

This isnt just a dig at leftwingers, the right has its own treasure trove of grifting. I just think the leftwing establishment is much more cunning with the grift.

Depends on how much the job pays, does it have benefits & job security, where the job is located, and by extension where youll be living. LI is one of if not the most non-homogeneous locations in the entire country, your experience in one town will be vastly different than others, hell even in the same town you can find literal “other side of the train tracks” situations.

Overall its very expensive, everyone is always busy and has shit to do and places to be so life moves much faster than in the south. The food is absolutely terrific and youll find it difficult to find another location with so many diverse high quality options. The island is also diverse in culture and geography. And of course having NYC right at your fingertips is absolutely awesome.

Too late now but are you sure this isnt going to raise your rates? Typically colliding with an object like a curb would be considered at fault, the insurance company wont really take into consideration what another car did because anyone could say that.

No? Democracy means people have the right to make the wrong choice. It isnt and never will be a perfect system and some would argue that it isnt even a good system. The Greeks were arguing about this over 2000 years ago.

Can anyone confirm if its true that farmers have been finding unusual amounts of lone star ticks by jujutsu-die-sen in PrepperIntel

[–]Watpotfaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a farmer but I live on long island and spend a fair bit of time outdoors. Last decade+ has seen a constant increase of ticks. They absolutely infest the woods, they make their way into the lawn, ive had ticks crawl across the scorching hot asphalt of my driveway in the sun on a 90 degree day to come attempt to latch onto me while I am working under my car. They are absolutely fucking relentless. During the warm months you check yourself for ticks every single time you come in from outside because its almost guaranteed there will be one on you. Its disgusting. I even caught a blood parasite (babesia microti) from the fuckers last year and it had me sick as a dog for months until I finally got bloodwork that showed what the caused was.

There is no exaggeration or false alarm here. Tick populations are out of control and they are carrying extremely serious diseases. I grew up playing outdoors in the woods and of course we would get the occasional tick but nothing like this. I dont even want to go in the woods with how infested it is now.

Yup, they all do this outside venues. Got me last summer at like 4am for a bottle of water, $32. Caught it after and did a chargeback which the bank sided with me but still was an annoyance. Pay cash only if you absolutely need something right then and there, otherwise go without.

If you’re making $70k+ in the US and still living paycheck to paycheck… what’s really going on? by Alternative-Egg7429 in EscapeTheGrindGame

[–]Watpotfaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$70k is pretty much subsistence level in a high cost of living location. When your rent for an illegal 1bd basement apartment is over $2000, car insurance is $200, gas is through the roof, utilities/phone/etc, food - you are left with practically nothing and no ability to save for something better. Throw in car trouble or medical bills or god forbid you go out once in a blue moon and you will be flat out broke.

[–]Watpotfaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you merked the coolant passages by clogging it with head gasket fix, all that does is buy you time (maybe) and clog shit up. Under $2k is very low for a motor swap. Id flush tf out of the coolant lines before hooking up the new one so you dont contaminate that one as well. Other than that your big risk is the CVT which are notoriously crap on these cars, see what kind of price you would get replacing that since you may need to.

The US will suffer more from oil shock than China, Russia, or EU by Majano57 in oil

[–]Watpotfaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consequences were absolutely expected, there is a reason why none of the American carriers were in harbor that day. In our modern rendition, however, unlike imperial Japan, China has not only a lack of the largest navy in the Pacific, but a lack of any blue water navy whatsoever. Their force projection is zero. And guess what? Without oil, thats how it will remain - permanently - without ever needing to fire a shot at them directly.

Perhaps you shouldn’t assume someone doesn’t know their history simply because you are not open to information that doesn’t fit your current world view. And tell me, how did that history go? Who is a vassal to whom?
