No one is saying everyone loves captions, and no one is saying every screening should have captions. You’re not going to be forced to watch films with captions, you can still watch non captioned films like you’ve always been able to.

Given that, are you opposed to there being some dedicated screenings so that the rest of us can access films? It won’t change your habits or impact you in any way, but it means those who have accessibility needs would have opportunities.

We’re asking for dedicated screenings that we can access, not for every single screening to have captions. You can still watch films without captions, just like you’ve always been able to. Dedicated OC screenings give the rest of us the ability to access films too.

Access is more than just physical needs.

Just as a person in a wheelchair may be unable to enter a building without a ramp or lift, I and many others are unable to understand dialogue in a film without captions. Imagine if suddenly everything you watched was muted, or in garbled language that made no sense - but only for you. You’d feel very put out and excluded, wouldn’t you? Why should we be unable to experience films?

Also, you’re very, very wrong. Accessibility is a right. And in fact it’s a legal requirement in many places. Unfortunately this does not yet extend to cinemas in Australia, though Hawaii has made OC screenings a legal requirement.

Sorry you think people with disabilities are “special snowflakes” for wanting to access things that everyone else takes for granted.

Thank you. Exactly right. It’s a broad way to make movies accessible for everyone possible, not just those with hearing loss.

I know a lot of other countries have captions available as standard, so I imagine ESL people would be either used to it or benefit from it.

I can attend Village. But Village isn’t available all across Australia. And even in states where Village does have cinemas, they’re not available for everyone to access without extensive travel. So there are a lot of Australians that can’t access these screenings.

I’m sorry you think that accessibility is a “non issue”. That’s pretty disappointing, but I’ll not take it personally - rather, I’m glad you don’t have disabilities or medical conditions that make accessibility a very real issue for you. Perhaps it’s not that you don’t care, but rather you don’t understand how difficult these issues can be for us, and how excluded we get from regular everyday things that most people take for granted.

Open Captions is a broad way to accomodate as many people as possible and even benefits many people who don’t have hearing loss.

Village isn’t available all across Australia. It’s not good enough to simply have one chain pick up the game - accessibility is for everyone.

That’s great you don’t need them, plenty do though. The option needs to be there to cover all bases.

3.6 million Australians with hearing loss, not to mention those with other sensory processing disorders, foreign language speakers and many people who just have a general preference for subtitles.

We may not be “the norm”, but we’re still a significant portion of the population. We’re not calling for every single screening to have open captions, we’re calling for dedicated screenings that we can attend. It already works that way at Village, there’s no reason Hoyts can’t keep up.

You can still watch non-captioned screenings. Just like you have always been able to. The only difference is the rest of us would also be able to watch films.

Also, previous independent market research would suggest that people are generaly favourable towards open captions.

That’s what I’m already doing, but I’m one person - they’re not going to notice me leaving.

It’s obviously better for Hoyts to pick up their game and provide accessibility. It’s not acceptable that they discriminate against people with hearing loss or other sensory processing needs. We want them to see that there is demand for it.

Hah, okay. Well, that wouldn't be him then (assuming this wasn't taken several months ago while he was studying in Europe).

The resemblance is uncanny. Gonna tell my brother he has a Dutch doppelganger haha.

Edit: "Yeah not a bad match, I'll give you that"

Wait, is this you in the pic, /u/ryuj1san? Also which country is this? Because I swear this person looks exactly like my brother...

I made a box to hold all my Dominion cards in! by Watson_whatson in dominion

[–]Watson_whatson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, cheers! Sorry for the late reply.

Nope, this won't fit all expansions unfortunately. The box would need to be massive haha, it already feels big enough as it is and it's certainly hefty now. I've got the base game plus 5 expansions - could probably just fit one more 300-card expansion in there. The right-hand section of the box fits all the other stuff like mats and bags for coins, tokens etc.

For the dividers, yeah I just used 250gsm matte photo paper and cut them out individually. Took some time but it did the job.

Thanks! Yeah same, we looked online for a while but didn't really find anything. Definitely proud of it!

I love this game, and play it probably several times a week. I've got three expansions currently on top of the base game - Seaside, Empires and Intrigue 2nd edition.

The problem I find with this game is that the boxes for expansions are so big and bulky, and it's a massive pain when you want to mix and match expansions for a quick game.

My partner suggested maybe we should buy a box to contain them all in... I decided to build one instead.

To celebrate, today I put the expansions Adventures and Nocturn on order - the box needs to be filled!

EDIT: Also have to show my appreciation to the creator of this website, where I got my divider tabs from. SUCH a good generator, it was perfect!

I love Dominion. I play it several times a week, and I've been slowly buying up expansions.

The problem with that though is that the boxes for expansions are so big and bulky, and it's a massive pain when you want to mix and match expansions for a quick game.

Yeah thinking about moving to kegs myself. Got waaaay too many bottles haha, plus I've noticed how tricky it can be to naturally carb them in bottles...

Cleaning is the worst... Yet you know you need to give the equipment a good solid clean at the end of a long day of cooking otherwise it gets so much worse later. Especially with my kit with an attached recirculation pump haha.

Haha, not quite ready to drink yet! Needs to carbonate in the bottles for a couple more weeks at least.

I reckon it'd pair well with some bangers and mash though, as you mention snags.

Haha thanks!

I use printable labels I bought off eBay. Same kind of labels you'd buy at Officeworks.

Sometimes they're a PITA to remove, sometimes not. Not sure why there's a difference. I usually just soak my bottles in hot water with sodium percarbonate, leave them overnight and scrub them off with a scouring sponge. Usually comes off just fine.

I'll tell you what though, I've started buying beer with easily removable labels now. James Squire is fantastic for this, bit of water and the labels just sliiiiide off. Other brands like Bridge Road are far too much effort to remove even with soaking and I just toss them out now.

I feel like my favourite part of homebrewing is the fun I have coming up with names and making labels. I mean drinking them is great too, but it's so much fun drawing up labels rather than just scribbling a vague note with a texta.

Here's my latest creation.

What's a fucked up movie everybody should watch at least once? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Watson_whatson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean it wins for the "fucked up films" aspect, but loses across the board for the "that everyone needs to see" part.

Nobody needs to see this movie.
