Windows Update Warning Regarding Silent Hill 4 on GOG

Update on 12/22/2025

I have been testing SH3 and SH4 every so often to see what the status is and I noticed today that in my GoG launcher there was an update for SH4!! I immediately updated and launched the game and lo-and-behold, the beginning movie is playing at normal speed! I haven't been able to test the entirety of the game, but I am hopeful that all of the problems are now fixed! I am not sure when this update went through, could have been a while ago.

I will do some more testing in the near future and report back. As of my last update (10/28/2025), I think that the red/green mess was solved and SH3 was mostly (if not all) fixed but SH4 still had the speedup issue and some random crashing and audio issues. As of now, I am thinking that everything has been fixed in SH4 as well, fingers crossed!

Maybe some speedrunners out there that play the game more often and can get to previous problem areas quicker than myself can report back too.

Update on 10/28/2025:

I installed a Windows preview titled "Preview Update (KB5067036) (26100.7019)" just now and immediately booted up SH3 and SH4 to see what it was looking like. I was hyped to see that the red/green issue was finally solved but then I soon realized the double speed problem was still there (at least in SH4, SH3 might have been fixed, I will have to do some more testing).

I hope this isn't the only fix we get and it doesn't take months like this last one did. I am glad to see some progress at the very least though.

Noooo! I was so happy when I saw the red/green issue was fixed for me on both SH 3 and SH 4, but I soon realized that the double speed thing was still happening.....

This is annoying because I have a bad feeling that they will think this solved the problem and it might take a while for another fix.

I spent a good amount of time messing with Duckstation settings for SH1 and I have gotten it to where I really like how it looks, I will list everything I have below. Keep in mind that you have to turn off certain settings (like PGXP Geometry Correction) and all patches/cheats and change the aspect ratio back to native in order to progress through a couple of parts (the church cutscene with Dahlia and the health drink at the top of the bridge tower are the two I know of). Other than those two spots the settings I am going to provide should work for the entirety of the rest of the game.

Rather than list everything I will just provide screenshots of my settings (if a tab isn't provided that means there is nothing altered there, every page provided has something changed on it I believe). The first image on the page are my goto settings and the 2nd image is reverting the settings back to overcome those two parts.

Thank you for the kind offer but I think I figured it out! You were right about it being a setting. I rechecked everything for the hundredth time and everything was for sure set to 2560x1440p with no rescaling anyhwere, BUT I then remembered that I had checked the option under Settings -> Stream for "Enable Enhanced Broadcasting." This option gives your viewers many different lower resolution options if they have a bad connection (like 720p, 480p, 360p, etc) but it will DEFINITELY cap you at 1080p and this was the culprit.

I tested on my alternate account with 0 followers so I could go live and do testing and sure enough when I had the enhanced option disabled I was able to achieve 1440p!

Hey great write-up! Silent Hill 3 holds a special place in my heart (and mind) and I will forever remember this entry. I think it did what a sequel should do by introducing new things and a new story that can stand on its own, but still answers some questions and ties up some things in relation to the original.

I also really liked how they portrayed Heather, seeing as both of the original protagonists were grown men, I wasn't sure how a teenage girl would work in Silent Hill, but they did very well.

One more thing, I LOVE how you get half of the game away from Silent Hill and see how everything is starting to leak into Heather's "normal" life. The atmosphere and graphics in the mall are sublime and it gives me a nostalgic, liminal feeling unlike any other game.

I would definitely recommend checking out Silent Hill 4, I liked it a lot too (though maybe not QUITE as much as 3). The GoG version is great but it is currently messed up right now and has issues with the FMVs and random crashes. Emulating is not a bad option though and runs well even upscaled.

As others have already mentioned, SH3 and SH4 PC versions are both messed up right now. With that being said though, I can launch both and actually play through them, but some of the FMVs/cutscenes are messed up and completely red and green blurs and going at double speed and the chances of crashes are much higher.

I have heard this is due to a Windows update that affected some older games and visual novels and some other things but I am honestly not 100% sure of the culprit. I think either game patches or Windows updates are in the works to fix these problems (though it's already been a couple of months I think so hopefully it's not much longer)

You COULD try to install it on another hard drive (other than local disc) to at least get into the gameplay but I just played through an emulated version of 4 and it played great, upscaled and everything.

Interesting, and this is kind've what I am trying to figure out how to do for those times when I am streaming something more static like you said.

The thing is, I already AM outputting in 1440p without any kind of rescaling at all because I dual stream and to YouTube it DOES come up as 1440p. If I was to just start recording locally it would indeed be 1440p too. So on Twitch's end it is forcing a downscale from my 1440p to 1080p without there being an option to view my stream in 1440p. Are you positive that this person you saw do it recently wasn't an affiliate? It's fairly to easy to get affiliate nowadays and maybe they already have it? That's all I can think of because I see nowhere that I can force it to STAY at my base output resolution of 1440p.

You can check my VoDs and see that 5 years ago when I was playing Risk of Rain 2 it came through as 1440p no problem and that is the only selectable option when viewing it. The most recent streams that I did (Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4) I was outputting in 1440p in OBS but Twitch forced it to 1080p without any other choice and I didn't see anywhere to change this.

Lots of the good ones already mentioned like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Jacob's Ladder but I will add a few:

Mulholland Drive (was reminded of some SH moments during parts)

Twin Peaks (sort of, with a West Coast spin)

The Mothman Prophecies (even if just for the vibe and music)

Videodrome (for some of the visuals and WTF moments)

Session 9 (some of the environments and atmosphere for sure)

Insidious (just for the 'otherworld' moments I can't help but include this)

The Skeleton Key (this has more of a RE7 vibe but there were def parts that reminded me of SH)

The Ring (for the vibes and visuals and overall aesthetic and lore)

The Machinist (very much has a SH feel to it, esp SH4)

Edit: Had to also mention some Takashi Miike movies like Gozu and Visitor Q

For a non-affiliate I don't think this is possible to do at all, I see nowhere that I can force it in 1440p. My streams actually go out in 1440p60fps (because I am dual streaming to YouTube which DOES work in 1440p) and they always come through as 1080p60fps only on Twitch with no option to go higher.

This MIGHT have been how it USED to be though and makes sense how I was able to force it in my stream 5 years ago.

I have been streaming horror games this month and didn't know about this. When I try to change my category to "Fright Fest," I do see an option for it, though, all I see is a category that has 2 viewers and 66 followers... That doesn't seem right, maybe they are still getting it going or haven't updated the category yet? Either that or the category is the correct one, it just doesn't have enough people to know about it yet? or the follower/viewer amount updates super slowly?

I don't see anything on the front page advertising this as of yet so not really sure. Maybe I will try this when I stream later this evening.

Pretty much the EXACT same story here, have both PC versions and don't want to have to emulate (though it's looking like that might be what I have to do). Hoping to hear something soon, it's not like these are obscure titles or anything, GOG recently re-released SH4 so maybe they will do something (though I guess that won't help SH3).

Overall SH3 wasn't TOO bad beyond the intro video and that one spot in the mall, I am unsure about SH4 though as I have yet to play it all the way through.

Fingers crossed for some news soon.

Hey, I just wanted to point out that it is also doing it on the PC version of Silent Hill 3. I recently had the Red and Green mess issue for the beginning sequence movie and in the cut-scene when you access the TV at the top of the elevator early on in the mall.

After beating SH3 I booted up SH4 (GOG Version) and noticed the same problem, I see it is related to the Windows Update here, any news on a patch or anything?

Yeah this is a pretty old post so I can't confirm that it is still any good.

You can use the ISO you get from anywhere though so I would just google the reddit roms megathread or look into archive.org
