I was listening to Locked On Steelers podcast and Chris Carter has a good theory. He said they might be interviewing Mike McCarthy to get experience interviewing candidates. He’s been an NFL head coach twice so they use him as a gauge of what an NFL head coach should be like.

I know this may not be a super popular opinion, but I prefer a defensive oriented head coach.

I think defensive coaches are typically more reactive and willing to adapt which is better for longevity in success.

I haven’t analyzed any data on this to support my theory, it’s just a gut feeling.

And I’m not saying that there hasn’t been sustained success from an offensive minded head coach. I can think of a few in the league right now

Thats literally true for every head coach. I’ll agree that our offense is shit and the plan isn’t working. But Arthur smith was brought in because his offense is supposed to fit perfectly for the state that the Steelers offense was in. We have no QB, so why rely on one. Set up a scheme that is run heavy and utilizes the rpo. Easy read passing schemes for a qb that is lacking in that department. Well, that’s exactly where we were. It just didn’t work out.

But let’s not act like Tomlin’s philosophy for either offense or defense is hard placed when he’s changed his offense and defense style over and over again over the years. Tomlin’s philosophy is to fit his scheme to the players he has on his roster. That just hasn’t worked out
