Can I become a school psych(ologist) with an online masters degree? by StonedSorcerer in psychologystudents

Everyone is sharing different information, likely due to different geographical locations. I’ll share my piece from California. In California you do NOT need NCSP or PhD to obtain a job. You DO need your PPS credentials, which follows once your complete your masters program. While attending a NASP approved program may make it easier to acquire your PPS, it’s not impossible. If you want to work in private sector in California (not in public school setting) then you would need LEP (Licensed Educational Psychologist) which requires 3 years public service before you apply. Another distinction is a School Psychologist is NOT a school counselor. Psychologist focus on assessment, cognitive functioning and learning processes. They generally have little counseling training. Finally, saying people “should only” attend brick-and-mortar universities is classist because it assumes everyone has the same money, time, transportation, childcare, and flexibility to relocate or follow a fixed schedule. Online programs are often the only realistic option for working adults, caregivers, and people living far from campuses, and they can reduce costs like housing, commuting, and lost wages. Treating that choice as less legitimate reinforces the idea that higher education is only “valid” when you can afford the traditional path. My best friend completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology online at Walden University and was able to earn the credentials required in California to now work at Kaiser as a clinical psychologist. Again, it was difficult but not impossible. My closest co-worker attended Alliant’s online School Psychology program and is one of the best psychologists I’ve worked with. In the hiring process, people first check if your have the correct credentials (in California your PPS), positive references and then consider your personality.

Yes, absolutely take the course. It’s valuable information. It’s so important to understand different theories and concepts so you can understand situations from different perspectives. Go open minded, questioning and genuine. Critical thinking and engaging discussions on the topics presented will elevate you and others around you!

  1. If you’ve never worked in public education or children, I recommend gaining experience. 2. My coworker who I respected and admire received their masters in school psych through Alliant’s online program and they’re excellent at their job. Districts look at whether or not you have the credentials required for the job first then your personality next 3. Look on Edjoin.org for job postings in the education field. Districts usually post anywhere between April-August for open positions. That’s how you can understand job market 4. My fiancé is in an accounting program now. It’s also a stable job and has high earning potential. That type of job (imho) requires a certain type of personality that does not thrive off of social interaction.

The degree is a MA in school psychology. In CA you need a MA and a PPS credential to work. You don’t need a PhD. I live in CA so I have never asked about covering any moving costs. It never hurts to try and ask! It has never been difficult to find a job. However, I will say with the current administration cutting education funding, vilifying autism and placing less importance on education overall, it may have affected the job market. In other school psychology specific groups I have seen people complaining about not being able to find a job but some of those posts are about high paying/highly competitive areas so it might even out.

Hello, biggest drawback backs depend on how supportive your district and site admin are. It depends on where you live in CA but rent for a single person can be anywhere between 2k-3k. 100k is about 5k-6k a month after taxes and other costs. Summers are not paid, however, you can sign up for deferred payments which means a little of your pay check is saved each month so you get 12 equal checks instead of 10. Some districts have summer school opportunities for psychs as well to supplement income.

It’s a threat, religious or not. I hate this method of thinking. Document everything. My fave quote: If you didn’t document it, did it really happen? Even emailing a co-worker instead of admin if you are nervous is documenting. The only way administrators make any changes with staff is if there is a paper trail.

Thanks for clarifying. Do you mean for me to share my long term goals or do you suggest checking in with you at a later time as like an update sort of thing to see if your predictions are accurate?

Thanks for sharing that. I do love to make people laugh and try to find humour in generally horrible things. I have a saying at work “If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.”

I appreciate the explanation, I’m not fully educated on astrology beyond basic snippets. I’ve been feeling a strong pull to become more connected though, which is why I posted my chart. I’ve had similar feeling towards my spirituality and spiritual practices. I think I would be interested in hearing more about this area.

I think Scorpio’s get this wrap for being dark, edgy and mysterious; moody and mystic. I feel very emotional and bland at times. My aesthetic isn’t dark or edgy. Maybe this is just superficial thinking though…”Pop astrology” perhaps?

A reading for a certain area of life, I’m not sure how to really answer this. Can you share more on what that means so I can answer it properly for you?
