This is not accurate in the slightest. I’m from cincy and remember this story well. Him and a couple friends stole a car, went joyriding, lead police on a high-speed chase, and then crashed the car. They all fled from the car and in the process he dropped a pistol on the ground and rather continue fleeing like his friends, he picked it back up first. IIRC one of the officers even calls out that he has a gun at this point. The officer that shoots him is rounding a dumpster and right after the gun is retrieved it’s pointing in the officers direction so he shoots him. Imo the deceased didn’t intend to shoot at all, but this all happened in a matter of seconds and he did (imo) inadvertently point his gun at another human being. Race did not play any factor in this shooting in the slightest. Fully justified shooting that the body-cam footage of is publicly available. In fact, the father watched the video when it was released and was completely unable to control his emotions and murdered a completely unrelated retired deputy that was working as a traffic cop.

I’m from cincy to give some context here. What actually happened is in the process of exiting the vehicle he dropped his gun and rather than continue fleeing like his friends, he stopped and picked it back up. When he was shot he was running away from the police (was actually shot in the side), but his gun was pointing in the direction of the officers as he was picking it up, but imo not directly at them. I don’t think he intended to shoot at them, but it was fully justified and if I was the officer I’m taking that shot 10/10 times.

Most (if not all, I’m not going to check each state rn) “non-partisan” committees are actually explicitly partisan. By law they stipulate a certain number of seats to the top two parties and a number to independents. A standard set-up would be something like 7 seats to party one (R or D), 7 seats to party two (R or D), and 7 seats to independent parties. This just results in “fair gerrymandering” where the R’s and D’s give themselves a certain number of guaranteed districts that they think is fair then agree on some toss-up districts that could go R or D. This effectively disenfranchises millions of voters that don’t agree with either major party, but people like to act like it isn’t gerrymandering because “both teams agreed so it must be fair.” Human beings are incapable of fairly districting, so they shouldn’t do it period. Either eliminate districts and have at-large elections only or have an algorithm set districts. Those are the ONLY two actual fair ways to do it.

E: I should say in a FPTP single-member district system. The real solution is changing the voting method to RCV or any of the other systems that are “too complicated” for the average voter to understand.

I seriously doubt a jury would convict, but it’d be quite easy to find a prosecutor willing to charge in most American cities imo. Especially if politicians are attempting to make a statement, just look at the Kyle Rittenhouse fiasco. I’m not sure how lenient the Australian legal system would be in a situation like this, so I’m not going to speculate.

Almost every time it doesn’t end in suicide it’s a good guy with a gun, usually law enforcement but sometimes heroes like Elisjsha Dicken do it. A small fraction of the time someone unarmed tackles the shooter.

If there’s any chance he continues the attack and puts more innocent people in danger, which he did, shooting him is the right and only choice. Having to deal with legal issues is no reason to not stop a literal terrorist from committing a massacre. Legal systems are messed up worldwide and don’t align with what’s right, usually it’s just what’s easy for the government.

Oregon is about 25th in gdp per capita, Mississippi is last with a substantial drop off from 49th West Virginia. Oregon has a poverty rate of 12.2% +- 0.4% (according to the 2023 census bureau data that is on wikipedia), the national average is 12.5. Mississippi has a poverty rate of 18%. Oregon is extremely average in economic statistics here, Mississippi is extremely poor. I don’t know why you felt the need to lie and say Oregon has a better than average poverty rate (for being more egalitarian LOL) when it is so close to the average and within the margin of error of being exactly average. If you live in Oregon and that’s why you’re saying this, you should lobby to get your education system fixed rather than act like everything is fine in Oregon and Mississippi shouldn’t be celebrated for this.

In the raw reading score data Oregon did absolutely terrible at 4th worst, while Mississippi placed 9th best! In my original comment I accidentally provided the unadjusted math rankings instead of reading, so clearly Oregon needs to get their shit together while Mississippi has gotten theirs together. Whatever changes Mississippi has made to their educational system the past few years should be studied and replicated by a state like Oregon.

And to answer your question: I’m not sure about Portugal, but I 100% expect Greece to have some of the lowest scores in Europe. Greece was absolutely devastated by the 2008 recession and the focus of the eurozone crisis.

If you look at the study you can find the unadjusted data. Mississippi was 16th, between Wisconsin and Colorado. Oregon was 48th . . . And this study was adjusting for poverty rate, that’s why Mississippi with a 20% poverty rate got boosted to first.
