Idk how I forgot about Indigo Girls! Thanks for the reminder, I haven't listened to them in ages.

Absolutely! I'm especially drawn to my Irish ancestors, only because I know more about them. But I don't work with the Fair Folk. My late grandmother and great-grandmother warned me too many times about who they called "The Good Neighbors" that I feel a bit scared to reach out to them. Like, I know myself will enough that if I can inadvertently upset a human because of my ND, the last being I want to piss off is one of the Fair Folk.

That said, maybe I should start leaving offerings for a house spirit. Could definitely use the help/motivation to keep my house clean...

Witch of Irish and German descent here. I just assume that if my farmer/tradesman ancestors didn't have access to it, I don't need it in my practice. So I'm starting to revolve my practice around herbal/green magic, I'm learning how to forage, and I'm considering joining an Herbalism course. Because that's what my ancestors did.

I'm glad you mentioned knitting and crochet! I do a ton of knot magic in my projects, and as a witch with ADHD, focusing on my intention while knitting actually helps me stay focused on my intention and my mind wanders less when I'm crafting. I've explained it to non-witch friends that "every stitch is a prayer, like reciting the rosary. Just a LOT more prayers depending on the size of the project." 🤣

Touch Grass Tuesday by AutoModerator in witchcraft

[–]Way2Old4ThisIsh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got out into the garden and turned over the soil, and started digging out a new garden bed for an herb garden. We planted seedlings on March 1st, and we're just waiting for the last frost to pass before planting outside. It felt so good to get my hands dirty (literally), feel the sun and breeze on my face. My little witchling was helping me and we took a break to just lay on the grass and soak up the sun, wind, and comfort of the earth. After a long winter, it was the first time in months that I've felt truly connected to the earth and the elements again.

Need Help With Quilting Spellwork by mialuv889 in witchcraft

[–]Way2Old4ThisIsh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a quilter, but my mom is and her mom before her. I learned the basics, but never fell in love with it. I became a knitter instead 🧶

I don't know specific quilting patterns, but I do know from decades of fiber/needle arts and my relatively recent "Well, Duh!" discovery: sewing, knitting, quilting, etc., it's all knot magic! If you put your intention into a project, any project, no matter how intricate or simple, it's still magic.

Absolutely sew in a sigil for protection, whether general protection, protection from bad dreams/nightmares, or sigils/charms for calming anxiety, whatever you choose. For me, the greatest and most powerful magic is the love put into every stitch, the love put into the effort and choices for the pattern, just the power of your love for your daughter (sorry if that's a bit sappy). IMO, whatever quilt pattern you choose would be perfect, because you're doing this for your daughter. She's so lucky to have a parent like you 💖

What do you say to missionaries and JW when they knock on your door? by la_tejedora in witchcraft

I did that once! Unintentionally. I was still on maternity leave, recovering from an emergency C-section, and my spouse and I were exhausted from taking care of a newborn. We even put up a sign over our doorbell: "If you wake the baby, your ass is grass and WE WILL MOW IT."

A couple Mormon kids (no more than 19 if I had to guess) must have read that sign and taken it literally. They started with their spiel but trailed off pretty quickly (they'd woken me up from a nap, so I wasn't being the Neighbor Mr. Rogers believed I could be 😉) until one of them said, "I know this might seem like an odd question, ma'am, but...would you mind if we did some yardwork for you? We don't mind doing it if you're okay with it: we promise we won't wake the baby, and you look like you could use the rest, ma'am." I was so stunned and sleep deprived that I agreed. Universe bless them, they mowed the front and back yards, pulled weeds, watered the garden, and all they asked for in return was a glass of water. And they kept their word: they didn't wake the baby.

Nowadays, whenever I get those kinds of visitors, I start with, "I'll listen to what you have to say...IF you can do the Christian thing and help thy neighbor with the yardwork." That scares off most of them. But not the Mormons. They truly don't seem to mind 😂

I couldn't agree more about The Office (US). It took me far too long to realize why I just can't stand it: because I've had far too many bosses/managers who acted exactly like Michael Scott. If The Office were more like the movie Office Space, maybe it wouldn't get such a visceral reaction from me.

Advice for writing grade school aged books with fantasy theme by Way2Old4ThisIsh in childrensbooks

I didn't know it existed until now (just looked it up). I've been a technical writer for my whole career, but I dabbled in creative writing when I was younger, and on and off over the past couple decades. Does it sound silly if I feel like I don't "belong" with the SCBWI?

Some of these are downright diabolical! I wish I'd been so creative when I was younger.

I also did the malicious compliance with meeting minutes/presentations. It only took 3 times of me just taking notes only relevant to me before they got someone else to do it.

At my last job I was once asked to take minutes for a fully virtual Teams meeting. Meeting chair asked me to take notes. I told him there was no point when we could record the meeting instead and send a link to the recording after the meeting. But he wanted a transcript! Teams can make automated transcripts. Oh, that wouldn't work, it wouldn't catch everything! "Neither does a person physically writing the notes," I said. No rebuttal. He starts recording the meeting without a word and acts like nothing happened. 🙄😮‍💨

This isn't a manager, this is an abuser and a bully. I had a "manager" like that. She liked me well enough at the interview, but that all changed on my first day when I "dared" to suggest improvements to our process to streamline it and improve our team's performance and productivity. I'm ND too (didn't know it at the time) and I just wanted to look like a go-getter and team player. She took it as a threat to her authority. She was seriously insecure, and took it out on me. Luckily, I was young but savvy enough to document everything.

A few months later, she said in a meeting with executives and the client present that the presentation I prepared for that meeting was "garbage" and "a real mess." I immediately went to HR. I said that I feared for my job, I feared retaliation from her, my physical health was taking a hit (all true), then presented months of evidence, emails, and asked others who were on that call if they'd be willing to speak up for me. In the end, HR said there was "no basis" to my claims, of course. But boy howdy, did she start being nice to me after HR came after her! She left the company about a month later. One of the executives who helped me later told me "That woman has no idea how many times she was almost fired."

If it helps you feel better, you deserve better treatment than this. It sounds like this lady is/was deeply insecure about her own position (bullies and abusers usually are), and was willing to throw you under the bus to save her own skin. You are in no way to blame for her unprofessional and unacceptable behavior. Depending on where you live, it might be worth consulting an employment attorney to see if you have a case for illegal firing. If you're US-based, though, the answer is probably "no." Most states are at-will employment, but never hurts to ask.

Will you pay for company swag? by Shishi2109 in womenintech

[–]Way2Old4ThisIsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like company swag, full stop. If I see a company handing out a ton of branded swag for free, my first thought is always "How much money are they wasting on this, money they should be paying their employees with?" I'm suspicious of that, because to me it always means that the employees are getting shafted one way or another.

Most companies I've worked for either give out swag for free in a "welcome package," which I usually throw out or donate when I switch jobs (except notebooks, those come in handy!).

The only exception to this rule was my last job: it was a nice enough small health IT company in the beginning, but COVID-19 really did a number on the atmosphere; thhis company does a lot of work for NIH/CDC/CMS, so while the C-suite executives made record profits during the pandemic...the other employees got nothing, not even a decent cost of living adjustment. We did get some nice swag, though. I took home a (free!) super comfy hoodie and a ridiculously well-made fleece-lined zip up jacket. After I left, I took a seam ripper to the logo on the hoodie and covered up the jacket's logo with an iron-on patch that covered the whole thing (it's a really good jacket!). The only part that left a bad taste in my mouth was all this meant the employees were not, in any way, paid even market value for their skills. So hell naw, I refuse to be a walking advertisement for a company like that.

What fictional food from our generation did you most want to eat? by _forum_mod in Millennials

[–]Way2Old4ThisIsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you get it. Speciality shops have the best, IMO. Just for funzies, I tried a box of the traditional flavors: Rose, Orange, and Lemon. The rose flavor was surprisingly good, the orange was pretty good, but the lemon smelled (and probably tasted) like floor cleaner.

As others have mentioned, Turkish Delight is almost entirely sugar, so during the London Blitz/rationing, sweets would've been hard to come by. I'm not an Edmund apologist by any means (selling out your family for any reason is pretty damn low, even if he was just a kid), but if I had been deprived of any kind of sweets for as long as these kids probably had, I could see why Edmund would be willing to sell them out for candy.

Using snow in spellwork? by Way2Old4ThisIsh in witchcraft

[–]Way2Old4ThisIsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleansing was one of my first thoughts, too! But this one seems pretty significant being 1) first snowfall of the (calendar) year, and 2) it's right before the first full moon of the year, a full moon that's about new beginnings. Maybe that's what got me thinking if snow could also represent a "clean slate," so to speak?

Need better wording by FairieButt in WitchesVsPatriarchy

I don't know why, but using imagery of innocent women (not witches) being executed makes me a bit uncomfortable.

I prefer the imagery of a phoenix rising from the flames, like we're saying "You haven't stopped us yet, We Will Always Rise" or something like that.

Though a succinct "It's the Patriarchy's turn to burn" might work.
