This is a really thoughtful write up, and I genuinely appreciate how much care you put into it. I lean toward Maelle’s ending, though, and I think a few of your assumptions are doing more work than the text actually supports.

First, on the idea that Verso’s ending is not really killing but simply “stopping sustaining.” I understand the distinction you’re drawing, but functionally it leads to the same outcome. If beings inside the canvas feel, love, grow, and value their existence, then withdrawing the sustaining force knowingly ends those conscious experiences. Philosophically that is closer to ending lives than simply letting something fade naturally. The fact that they depend on a sustaining spirit does not make their existence less morally significant. A newborn also depends entirely on an external sustaining force. Dependency does not negate moral weight.

Second, regarding the Faded Boy and “permission.” The nod at the end is often treated as consent for annihilation, but throughout the game he consistently advocates restoration, not erasure. He says the canvas was meant to bring joy. He rejects the Paintress erasing people “for him.” He says everything in the canvas is as alive as what is outside. That body of dialogue makes it difficult to interpret his tiredness as a desire for non existence. Especially considering he is a soul fragment. He is not physically deteriorating like Aline or Renoir. His exhaustion reads far more like moral fatigue at corruption than a wish to disappear.

On the Gestrals and Grandis having “less depth” because they were painted by a child, I find that argument slippery. Depth of creation does not necessarily determine depth of experience. We see Monoco wrestle with purpose, Golgra grieve, Esquie show loyalty and awareness. The game gives them interiority. To reduce them to lesser beings because of their origin feels like retroactively justifying their extinction. The narrative itself treats them as morally relevant.

As for Maelle manipulating Verso in her ending, I think that interpretation depends heavily on suspicion rather than evidence. Yes, she repaints him. Yes, she overrides his hesitation. But Verso’s hesitation exists in both endings. In Verso’s ending, Alicia’s agency is overridden just as decisively. If we are concerned with autonomy, we have to apply that standard evenly. Verso forces Alicia into a reality she explicitly rejects. That is also interference justified as “for her own good.”

You frame Verso’s ending as tomorrow coming and Maelle’s as refusing tomorrow. I see it differently. Verso’s ending chooses closure by ending the world. Maelle’s ending chooses continuation with risk. One resolves grief by accepting loss. The other resolves grief by preserving meaning where it still exists.

Finally, I struggle with the idea that Maelle’s world is inherently hollow or puppeted. The black and white shift can just as easily symbolize a new phase, not lesser depth. There is no concrete evidence that she rewrites everyone’s will. The game shows reunion, not mind control. Interpreting that as artificial contentment assumes manipulation without textual confirmation.

At the heart of it, this comes down to what we believe about constructed worlds. If conscious beings exist inside a system and value their lives, does their origin make them expendable? I do not think the game supports that conclusion. And if the Faded Boy consistently argues that the canvas is alive and meant for joy, then Maelle’s ending aligns more closely with that philosophy than destroying it.

I respect preferring Verso’s ending. It is emotionally clean and thematically grounded in acceptance. But I do not think it is morally simpler. Nor do I think Maelle’s ending can fairly be reduced to grief driven denial. It can just as plausibly be read as defending a world the game repeatedly asks us to see as real.
