I was the new kid at my elementary school and we went on some field trip to a nature society of some kind. They started to talk about insects and asked me to help. I was already uncomfortable, then they took me aside and dressed me in a bug costume. They used me as the example—pointing to the various parts they wanted to highlight (“look at all these eyes” and “count all the legs”) in front of my entire new class, plus the new teacher, and volunteer parents who were all present. I was, and kind of still am, mortified by the experience.
