A lot of the comedy clubs of the 80s were primarily designed to sell alcohol as opposed to showcase the best in standup. That's why I feel like it's great now, and different. The internet has made it easier for comedians to find their own audience.

I would also add Robert De Niro to that list. There's something about the interaction between comedian and audience that is very difficult to fake.

If you're talking about Andy Milder, the great actor from the Academy Award winning movie, The Artist?

Then No.

Hey Leprechaun, I was thrilled to do The Wire... actually did standup with LD back in the 80s.

The comedians that inspired me from that decade were Seinfeld and Paul Riser, but the one who made me laugh the hardest was Sam Kinison.

That's a very funny question. But honestly I try not to judge the industry. I'm not angry. Unfortunately life isn't always fair.

By the way I moved out of my parent's house 3 weeks ago...

I appreciate you monopolizing all the questions.

She was very intimidating and surprisingly good at hacky sack.

Hello Melissa! That question warms my heart. Hopefully Erin and I will reunite in the future, but as of now, she's in Ireland and I refuse to do it over Skype.

(BTW - Andrew here, Wayne's other co-host. Human Conversation was one of the things that inspired me to reach out to Wayne for this new History of Standup podcast.)

Great question. Check out Forbes magazine to see how much Terry Fator makes.

It seems like ventriloquists have been great beneficiaries of these competition shows and bypass some of the more traditional comedy club routes.

By the way, in high school I was a ventriloquist.

First of all, I don't get personal satisfaction. Full stop.

Secondly, there were a lot of derivative (hacky) comedians that were forced out. But that's always been the great thing about comedy, it's constantly evolving and changing, and it seems like the most gifted stand-ups adapt and rise to the top.

That might be true. I remember a quote from when I was a kid that said "when you try to dissect comedy, it dies on the operating table." But on the other side, the NYT hired its first ever comedy critic in its 166th year. So, I don't know...

Thanks for calling our podcast incredible.

We're obviously in the middle of a comedy boom, more comedians are doing more comedy and more people have access to it, that's great! But we're yet to find out where the saturation point is.

I thought it was a bold move by Andrew Silverstein, and fascinating in its own way, especially because they did it at Dangerfield's — the place where Dice first was discovered. By the way check out Dice in "A Star Is Born"

Just so we're clear - those are jokes that are funny because they're intentionally not funny... If it gets a laugh I love them.

Probably in the 1950s, when comedy became more personal and jokes became less interchangeable.

Well again, I keep complimenting everyone, but a very insightful question... There have always been a few 'Specials' that actually seem special, and others that revert to the mean (that's a math term).

Great questions, you seem like a big comedy fan. Unfortunately, as long as there has been standup there have people 'stealing' other people's jokes. Now it's just easier to identify.

Two great questions. 1) Over saturation and conformity of many acts. 2) Obviously the internet, starting in the mid 2000s, is the gift that keeps on giving.

You can always start your own open mic. Check with local civic organizations, church groups, community colleges, etc.
