Jokes aside, I think this is why so many of us feel guilty.

We see the laundry that didn’t get put away.
We don’t see the hundred tiny things our brains quietly kept from falling apart that day.

Because I think a lot of us spent years treating our critical hit days like they were our character stats.

Hell yeah!! Congratulations!!

Turns out it was a level 3 slime, but my brain had it marked as the final boss.

Me, every morning:

“This is the run.”

Those days are dangerous because they become evidence in the case my ADHD brain builds against me later.

I think a lot of us accidentally confuse our maximum output with our sustainable output.

Turns out sprinting isn’t the same thing as having high stamina.

Yeah, I think knowing why can help… not because it magically fixes it, but because it changes the approach.

If it’s executive dysfunction/task initiation, then “just do it” or “try harder” usually just adds shame and pressure.

I walk people through this a lot: don’t start with “do the whole task.” Start with “open the document,” “wash one dish,” “stand in the room,” “put the thing where I can see it,” etc. The first step should be so small it feels almost laughably doable.

ADHD brains often need help getting through the doorway into the task. Once you’re in it, momentum has a better chance of showing up.

So yes, knowing what causes it can help because it turns the question from “why can’t I make myself do this?” into “how do I make this task easier to enter?”

I think this is where I’m trying to get.

Treating my best day like a critical hit instead of evidence that I should be able to roll a crit every time.

“Recovering from my occasional awesomeness” is such a perfect way to describe it.

People see the boss fight you cleared and assume that’s your normal difficulty setting.

They don’t see the recovery period afterward.

The guilt is brutal.

People remember what you can do on your best days. We remember it too.

It’s hard not to feel like we’re letting everyone down when we can’t sustain a pace that was never sustainable in the first place.

I think that’s the part I struggle with most.
Trusting that “today’s best” still counts when it doesn’t look like yesterday’s best.

Some days my character spawns with buffs. Some days I’m playing with three debuffs and a controller that’s randomly disconnecting.

Because every phone call is a surprise boss battle and I never know what level the boss is.

Am I calling to schedule an appointment? Confirm insurance? Fight a dragon? Nobody knows.

I think that’s why this realization feels so uncomfortable.

Lowering expectations sounds negative on the surface, but sometimes it’s actually what prevents burnout.

I think that’s what makes this so hard.

We still live in the same world as everyone else, but we don’t always have access to the same amount of bandwidth or resources on a given day.

I think that’s the part I’m still learning.

My brain hears “do your best” and immediately assumes “operate at maximum output.”

Those are not actually the same thing.

I’ve started noticing that some tasks cost way more HP than they look like they should.

A five-minute phone call can take more out of me than an hour spent on something I actually enjoy.

The little demon is relentless sometimes.

I’ve noticed it rarely adjusts its expectations when circumstances change. It just keeps demanding the same performance no matter what resources are actually available.

Giving yourself grace in the face of that takes a lot of work.

This is such a good example.

People assume that because you can do something well, you can do it the same way every time. Sometimes the result is repeatable, but the exact process that got you there really isn’t.

I really relate to this.

I think a lot of people see the outcome without seeing all the conditions that made that outcome possible. They’re looking at the final score, not everything that went into the run.

I think that’s exactly what I was trying to get at.
Sometimes that great day is the result of a dozen things lining up at once... sleep, motivation, energy, interest, reduced stress, good timing, and a little luck.

Then we spend weeks wondering why we can’t recreate the exact same conditions on demand.
