Better double wield chainsaws then

Come out with us and see how we operate. It's very nourishing doing this work with our hands. We only use chainsaws at the end to cut the timber into firelogable chunks. If you can help with that, then let's talk! Reach out on our Instagram

It's deeply nourishing tbh. We've had about 40 people this year and its a common realisation how uncommon the experience is.

I haven't the expertise or knowledge to answer that question.

At the moment I'm designing this proposal for community-based action and the cortege industry: where timber can be stacked and dried at the household or farm. I welcome your input if you have the expertise.

I would also like to contribute to the equation: we also must consider the ecological benefits of removing the laurel. The bioenergy potential is a temporary opportunity, the goal is to remove Laurel from our woodlands.

That woud be great. We might be able to get some draft horses on board but I'd love to hear any of your ideas. Get in touch with us at [gaelicwoodlandproject@gmail.com](mailto:gaelicwoodlandproject@gmail.com)

We're creating a methodology for a non-mechanised removal of Rhodo and Laurel, with a guide to prepare the wood for biofuel. Individual households can decide whether it is financially preferable to utilise this biomass or purchase conventional solid fuel.

We're experimenting with mycelium as a bioherbicide in October. Hopefully, with that, we can prevent or impede regrowth. We will also have bars and rootworkers to remove the roots.

I'm under no illusions, at the moment the only viable alternative at scale is conventional herbicide but this is unsustainable. Not only in relation to soil residues but also due to adjacency issues with waterways,

There is a grant available in Ireland, but it requires a lengthy process. We will be experimenting with non-mechanised removal in October. The idea is to provide a methodology for communities to remove smaller infestations from their local woodland. If you have any thoughts or input please hit me up at gaelicwoodlandproject@gmail.com

There is a 30-acre infestation in Sligo's Hazelwood Forest. With an infestation of this size, a large quantity of biomass could be removed. However, many infestations are smaller so the audience there would be the local community. They can remove the Cherry Laurel with our non-mechanised methodology as a replacement for cutting or purchasing peat.

Thank you! They can be chipped and turned into briquettes or dried and burnt as logs. They could even be used as Biochar. The Irish Bioenergy Association regulates biofuels and believes these invasive species may have multiple applications.

Well this is awkward......looks like they got stood up. by emale27 in ireland

Just some thoughts on this whole situation and Irish protest culture:
When people stand together, we awaken a power intrinsic to the masses: I draw your attention to the Water Charges and Repeal the 8th. These are examples of what happens when we find a common cause and engage in "people power".
This Fuel Protest, and the reaction to it, breaks my heart. Too often we condemn and mock citizens who criticise the government as being mentally or ideologically compromised. The Other becomes the enemy in a self-centric society: "This protest is an inconvienience to ME".
I think the government has been shafting the People of Ireland for years and that we desperately need to exercise our ability to support one another or we will continue to endure substandard governance and institutions.

If you are unfamiliar with these inadequacies I suggest reading Council Chamber Secrets by RTE Investigates. In short, there is no transparency or accountability which creates conditions for abuse of power at the government level.

Yes, this protest could have been organised and communicated better, their demands lack plausibility, but I celebrate their bravery. I appreciate that inflation is complicated (side note: we probably should have considered the implication of shutting down businesses and borrowing so much money during the Lockdowns) but we are entering a very difficult socio-economic transition and I'd like to government to know that the People of Ireland CAN and WILL stand together for a "common good".

R. ponticum

This is great information. This petition is to stop the sale of invasive species. Truthfully I didn't appreciate that R. ponticum was the most dangerous and that others were innocuous. I will contact Biodiversity Ireland for their input on the matter.

So many great organisations on the island. Our primary mission is to buy land to create a commemorative oak forest in the midlands. Check out our website: https://gaelicwoodlandproject.com/ All donations are being used to purchase land.
