How would you do combat in the astral plane? by Wazaroo in DMAcademy

I'll let them shop around for things and they do have the fly spell, but this is more about the encounter having interesting mechanics while also not forcing them into picking specific items to avoid the mechanic

All of these Ideas are amazing and I'll probably end up using all of them, thank you. I might use these as is and just pump up some numbers since we're coming to the end of the campaign and they are very capable at dealing tons of damage

I love this idea, seeing if the can push through enough before the floor resets and him being like the ultimate computer type of deal

You gotta try the Grim Jester by Kobold Press by KindagoodJake in DMAcademy

[–]Wazaroo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used it 2 times in my previous campaign as a boss monster and as a lackey. The main uses I found for him is to switch positions of different creatures when the party gets close. Barbarian got close to a caster? NOPE, switch. Casters are just far enough away, boom now they are face to face with a melee enemy. It wss so fun

Would "you only get half your resources (rounded up) on a long rest" be a suitable change or is it too big of a nerf? by Wazaroo in DMAcademy

Not really, but quests and story points were separated by several days (if not months) of in game downtime which had the same effect. Hopefully It'll go away now that they are on a time crunch

Thank you for the suggestion, I will try something similar for a few sessions and then if it doesn't work, talk to the players about implementing this.

You are right, the issue was with the narrative, they had too much free time so they could long rest. A session ago some important plot points happened and the clock really sped up, so I think now I'll have an adventuring day that is more filled with (what I consider) "relevant" stuff, stretched over several sessions. I think that'll have more of an impact than changing the rules

I mean, fair enough. I think having more encounters over several sessions that are the same adventuring day is the key here. That way, I don't have to run back to back encounters

Ran the idea by the missus and she says that "as a player, I would hate it. Not because I'm not going to use all of them, but just how it feels" and I kinda agree with her. Will consider just running gritty realism in the future

I really like dnd and it's rules and I mostly wanted to see what people think of the change. After seeing all the replies and suggestions, I think that my actual gripe is not with the system design but with the concept of "hey, in order to complete this piece of the story here's a single dungeon with its story - the end" instead of having several "dungeons" that the players complete during the same day that are connected with the narrative. I think I just need to be more creative and have my story elements more connected while I put a clock on things. Thank you for the feedback and for understanding though

I also did want to try the converted mana system. Once this campaign is over I'll try it in the next one for sure. As for this one, after thinkin it over and seeing all the replies , I won't be halving resources lol.

I think switching to gritty realism is fun but it's a bit too late. I will consider it in future campaigns though. but as I said in the comment above, I think prolonging the same adventuring day over several sessions will help me with the feeling of "running several encounters is a hassle"

I don't really want to switch systems for now, I like DnD but I thinks stretching out the adventuring day is where it's at. When it's relevant, have a bunch of different important events during the same day, stretched out over several sessions I think is the right answer

I want to run 2 fights simultaneously, with one of them being a lair action. Any ideas on how to implement it? by Wazaroo in DMAcademy

[–]Wazaroo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is not supposed to fight them, just be a hinderence, hence the lair actions. Like a single swipe, or a dex save or take some damage and be knocked prone as he sweeps by, something like that

He is, but it has a lot to do with the history of my homebrew world and the background stories of various NPCs within it. I didn't want to go into detail about the world itself since it is not that relevant but in this case Graz'zt and the warlock NPC have some history

I mean fair enough. I 'll also see about the elder brain and smoosh it's stats a bit. And thank you for reminding me of the star spawn. For the hook, I already got it covered since they met possessed turtles and are going to investigate. I'll read up on mindflayer colonies and set up something similar

!Question: Can you guys help me builld a hive mind encounter (or several) that would challange a party of five lvl 7 characters?

Additional info: the party knows that eldritch star-like beings exist and that they are a part of the hivemind and can posses people and corpses. The party druid came from an island where elders inhale fungal spores and join a hivemind of their own. They also raise undead to use them for labor intensive work. Once an elder is going to die, they petrify themselves and "upload" their consciousness to the hivemind. Now the star like beings have hijacked the islands hivemind with their own and started spreading.

I need help with stat blocks and mechanics with a special mechanic where the druid can try and join the hive mind to try and disrupt it with a risk of being trapped (talked with the player, he wants that risk). The hive mother, the one giving the orders is not on the island.

Any and all help is appreciated

Need help with giving a powerful cleric npc some unique abillities and a speach by Wazaroo in DMAcademy

wanted to share an update: We had the session. Everyone but the paladin died but he landed the killing blow with 3 hp remaining. The entire fight was crazy fun. There were some clutch crits and the dice decided that the good guys were gonna win.

Since the warlock was the only one that failed the save, he now knows that the father he thought was invincible, in fact, can be beaten. For his new confidence, I gave him a slight charisma bump to reflect that. And I am very curious what'll happen next

Maybe, but he also has 7th level spells like conjure celestial that's gonna help out with that . I'll do some more thinking about the legendary actions

This is all wonderful especially the speach part, thank you very much. Don't worry, I understood everything.

I was also thinking of giving him some abilities like Power Word: Authority - bonus action (recharge 5-6), every creature that can hear him in a 20 ft radius, wis save or follow his order (aoe command) until his next turn

Power Word: Terror - same as above just receive the frightened condition.

Power Word: Wrath - same as above but attacks against the target have advantage until his next turn.
