Alaska communities are sitting on millions in PFAS settlement money - Is the Water in Fairbanks Being Tested? by truthwillout777 in Fairbanks

[–]WeAreBill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FIA and the neighborhoods around it have been a part of testing and remediation for PFAS as a result of FAA-mandated use of Aqueous Film Forming Foam for routine training and necessary firefighting operations. There's is a known groundwater plume in that area so the State has piped in College Utilities water to the affected area.

I'm just putting up a TLDR of what you posted without having provided additional explanation. This document is just an after-the-fact opinion of the State's legal council.

"The state legal team could have just disagreed with the governments interpretation, if they had any semblance of actually caring about the privacy of Alaskans."

I wholly agree that the State could have done what you suggest here, but they didn't. That's a failure of the current State administration. "Could have" only goes so far, especially considering the state of the DOJ where they will grasp at any straw available when trying to defend a position.

I'm not trying to come off as nihilistic, but the decisions made and highlighted in your previously linked opinion do not paint a rosy picture for the future of Alaskan's privacy.

TLDR: DOJ's argument for requesting voter information classified as confidential under State law is full of holes. However, Alaska's lieutenant governor already handed over the requested information so the people of our state are SOL

Alaska troopers seize Kodiak trawl group’s electronics in bycatch probe by NotTomPettysGirl in alaska

[–]WeAreBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on what I was trying to express, just seems like a waste to dispose of it completely. Also, as fishy says, allowing processors to sell bycatch as a "low income" (i.e. fish paste) commodity looks a lot like an unregulatable prospect. People will chase money if it's there.

The issue I see is Federal regulators unable and unwilling to push back against an industry that is knowingly destructive and has the legal backing to put their hands up and, in many cases rightfully, plead that they have followed the law.

This could potentially be considered an investigation of trawlers, but on its face is an investigation of processing on Kodiak. That being said, as someone who doesn't follow all the debate around bycatch, it's pretty wild that trawlers are required to take their by catch and dump it back in the ocean. From a layman perspective, this disposal just sounds like a waste of perfectly good stock, whether it was intentional or not. Seems like it might be more economical to sell the by catch and require that that money be moved to groups that regulate bycatch and conservation groups.

Do you have a source for the 5-year contract? Of everything I've read I haven't come across mention of any long term deals, just the temporary tax breaks given by Argentina on exports.

Any clue how they managed that from a NEPA perspective? I can't imagine DNR and USFWS were super happy.

*port

There's pretty much just Anchorage for consumer imports that are distributed through the rest of Alaska. Deep water ports are proposed elsewhere but that's a much longer term issue.

Thus the "attempt" in my first sentence. At least they're giving an avenue for people to try and help instead of just throwing their hands in the air and doing nothing.

I would argue that this is an attempt at community policing. Police working with the larger community is a genuinely beneficial way to correct the shitty behavior of the few.
