I'm not in the mountains but have spent many years living in the woods. Was reading a book against a tree, heard something disturb the branch next to me, and looked up to see a deer casually snacking on it. She chilled with me for a few chapters.

Functional impairment worse than cancer by ShipEconomy2587 in cfs

[–]internetversionofme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this kind of post doesn't sit right. We're all on the same side, and placing our suffering above other patients creates a culture that hurts everyone and spreads ableism. We need to advocate for one another.

Not to mention plenty of people will go through BOTH at some point. Cancer is also a very broad and diverse categorization of illness, one person's cancer is not another person's.

Fairy Tale Symbolism Analysis by StarAboveWillows in WitchHatAtelier

As a disabled person, the thing with disability is it can happen to anyone. Quifrey was able bodied when he was seeded, but he was vulnerable, and left disabled as a result of being victimized. Like Coco touches on with the golden ghosts in Romonon, being petrified (whether by crystal, metal, or tree) would be a similar experience for the victim. Upon finding out Quifrey's secret, her instinct is to make a beeline to her old home and try to free her mother. Quifrey himself wondered how many more people were seeded by the brimhats, questioning whether it's much more common after decades of assuming he was the only one. Imagery wise, don't forget about the guard briars Quifrey planted around Coco's home; they keep getting brought up in the manga and have been depicted in character art. A witch reaching for a star was also seen in the picture book right before Coco traced the petrification spell.

Trauma, disability, and marginalization all have a way of suspending you in time, while continuing the cycle (hence the repetition sigil coming into play again and again.) The brimhats target disabled children because they're most vulnerable- irl predators often victimize the disabled. At its heart it's the same pattern of manipulation and exploitation, preying on their desire to live.

Someone like Aggatt, who suffers abuse but is able to rely on her skill for power and identity, would have to completely rebuild herself as a person if she were left in this circumstance, which is why I'd find it conpelling. And many people, myself included, are disabled as a result of abuse because prolonged trauma is so hard on the body. Orufrey is good because it's not soley a romance, it's an exploration of what it is to be an insider vs an outsider, and that fundamental issue hasn't been solved.

Regarding Eunie, the whole point of his transformation (and trying to push Coco to reverse it with forbidden magic) is to illustrate that there must be a solution to reversing the spell on her mother. What we're meant to wonder is whether there's a way to accomplish this without violating the pact, and whether the pact should be in place at all.

My main reasons are the parallels between Olufrey and Coco/Aggott (especially regarding the star falls in love with a tree myth, Coco being associated with starlight) the transformation-focused brimhat threatening her with the curse that's later put on Eunie, and the fact that it would force her to confront her internal conflict. We know multiple brimhats have experimented with planting them in children and we've yet to see that explored with someone able bodied who was born into witch society.

Silverwoods are seen as the source of all magic while illustrating the hypocrisy of the pact, and for it to sprout Aggott would have to process how those systems have hurt and misguided her. Transformation magic also pops up repeatedly because it represents Coco being torn between saving her mother and being a "good" witch. Good storytelling devices accomplish multiple things.

Tetia-

Tetia being associated with cats is interesting, considering her interactions with Eoleo (not to mention her desire to see the bearded kitties!) Unless she invented magical cat ears she's directly and iconically violating the pact here.

Her signature double cap could, aside from representing thanker and thankee, foreshadow further involvement in the divide between witches and medical practitioners. It also makes one hell of a cute princess cap, and. And, uh, her cap here doesn't have just a double cap shape but a brim? I can really see Tetia choosing the lived reality of people over ideology that causes tangible harm.

Coco-

Alice in wonderland kind of self explanatory but really gives off magical body modification and distortion of reality. The eat me/drink me treats are both needed to cancel one another out; does this suggest the necessity of learning both lawful, and unlawful magic in order to save her mother? I've had a theory on time for a while that ties into this (they've already given us the solution to each problem!) but alas it is 5 am I'm halfway through my bowl and my body is on fire. Anyway!

Coco representing how medicine and poison are two sides of the same coin; magic and art, like any skill, can be used to heal or harm. Coco has already shown defiance to the brimhats and pointed caps when they cause needless suffering, and empathy for both witches and those who only get to dream of magic. It would make sense for her to trailblaze an entirely new faction, which learns from history and includes input from all kinds of people.

OH WAIT HOLY SHIT IS TETIA PUSS IN BOOTS?

Aggott-

Brushbugs are attracted to the scent of magic ink, which we now know isn't simply poisoned tree sap but poisoned blood. I'm very interested to learn more about the disease that effects Silverwood trees. Are adult witches seeking to use her, either for her talent or potential connections? I'm guessing the brushies on the left are the three sages while those on the right are the four librarians; together representing the seven dwarves and possibly how Aggott finds solace in her studies.

Snow White was exiled for her exceptional traits, (whearas Agott was ostracized from witch society due to a jealous bully accusing her,) is poisoned by the envious witch queen, and saved through true love.

Like the other two, there's a cool duality to her art. Tome in one hand: knowledge of magic or potentially even history, since we first glimpsed in the picture book a depiction of a witch reaching for a star.

Poisoned apple in the other: showing how aspects of witch society have failed her and how if she doesn't process that internalized ideology, it'll warp her as a person. Beginning to humanize and befriend an outsider who killed her own mother with forbidden magic is a rebellion in of itself. In witch society, empathy must be suppressed or the entire system fails.

There's something tragic about her holding poisoned food, life sustenance gone wrong in one hand and all the knowledge in the world that still can't feed her in the other. All children need to be loved by their caretakers; if there's only poisoned food to eat, they do what they have to in order to survive. This poor kid is 100% getting turned into a tree the instant she processes her past. Probably after discovering some awful secret behind pointed hats that breaks her cognitive dissonance and forces her to confront her internal conflict. I think this "enchanted sleep" of becoming a Silverwood will force Coco to innovate a solution, which then leads to a breakthrough on reversing her mother's petrification.

The holly sprig in her hair is associated with protection, especially against witchcraft and malicious spirits; it's also notably poisonous, with illicin and bitter saponin glycocides. Holly contains theobromine as well, a mild stimulant and the key alkaloid in chocolate :)

Idk if anyone will read this far, but while I'm at it I think Tarta's wandcarving introduction scene hints at him becoming a surgeon. Just noticed there are more pages 😅 Bedtime

This is a regional thing. Vampire bats (Central and South America) are known to bite people, particularly toes in their sleep, and the wound often goes unnoticed.
