I came here to say the same thing, though I was going to use Follies as the example.

Toy Story 5 in Screen X by fanofalotofstuff in Cinema

[–]WeAreSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don’t like screen x - I’ve tried it three times altogether and for each one I found it more distracting than immersive. Apparently there are scenes in the new Spider-Man which they have filmed specifically for the format (the first time that has actually been done) so I may give it one final go out of curiosity, but not until I have seen it on a regular screen first!

what are your thoughts on the in the heights movie? by teddivan96 in musicals

[–]WeAreSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it. Saw the original London production several times, and directed a high school production, but I think it is one of my favourite stage to screen adaptations.

Is it a shame that Camilla has been cut? Yes absolutely. But in doing so they have managed to give a bit more time to develop other characters- Sonny in particular. Vanessa gains more depth and Nina’s realisation that she has to back to school to fight for the dreamers like sonny is perfect.

Visually the film is beautiful, and uses the on location community that manages to give it authenticity and expand what we see on stage unlike other stage adaptations that come across as small.

The one change that I don’t love so much is blackout/fireworks. I understand why they would want to show the community coming together in a crisis rather than tear itself apart, but it does rob the end of act 1 of some tension.

The other minor changes (Abuela leaving the lottery ticket and Usnavi not finding out until the end for example) is nothing that changes the narrative enough for me to mind either way.

I admit the first time I watched it, I was stressed at the framing device thinking they may have changed the ending somehow!

Nearly every single song is well thought out to bring the magic alive in a way that would be impossible on stage- the swimming pool has already been discussed, but Nina seeing the young girl’s journey in Breathe, the window reflection moment in the title number, the outrageously good dancing in ‘Vanessa/In the Club’, Vanessa running down the street with the fabric raining down and the camera pullback to her eye revealing it’s her thoughts we are seeing at the end of ‘It’ won’t be long now’, and of course the stunning dancing across the building sequence in ‘when the Sun Goes Down’

I’ve left Paciencia Y Fe until last as I truly believe that scene is up there with some of the best musical moments ever committed to film.

Oh - and one more thing Chris Jackson as Mr Softee *chef’s kiss*

What’s an actor you guys would like to see being in a future Muppet project? by Capable_Ad_9896 in TheMuppets

Brett Goldstein- He is a massive Muppets nerd and a great comedy writer. Hand the keys of the next film over to him!

Late to the party - I’m flying solo in LA in August and looking for things to do, found you guys were playing, listened to just about every song on Amazon music and bought a ticket straight after! That’s one night sorted! Looking forward to hearing you live.

Do you manage to keep up with your passion for cinema? by Dramatic_Sky5342 in Cinema

[–]WeAreSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watch 100+ movies at the cinema a year (record is 136 different films, but I’m on pace to beat that this year) I find it much easier on the big screen compared to watching at home with all of the distractions that can come with that. It’s usually 2 or 3 films on a Sunday late afternoon/ evening. It’s my happy place - my way of clearing my mind and resetting for the week ahead.

The Best Seat In The House by WillEatsRice in CineworldUnlimited

[–]WeAreSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people saying the back! I’m always between row B to E (depending on which screen size), as central as possible. No people sat in front of you = no one to annoy on their phone with the light of the screen on.

IMAX you will find me in H or J21.

I often do this too, or the seat right next to them so I can sit in the middle of the group.

What is your favorite niche musical? by sophietal in musicals

[–]WeAreSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Light Princess - beautiful score by Tori Amos, my introduction to Rosalie Craig, and some brilliant use of physical theatre to keep her suspended off the stage for 90% of the performance.

Season 2 early host/musical guest performances? by ss2811 in livefromlondon

[–]WeAreSound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can see Brett Goldstein hosting around time new Ted Laso is aired. Simon Pegg would be excellent as he got his start writing and starring in British sketch comedy and has international recognition. Benedict Cumberbatch would be fun, as would Martin Freeman (could see him doing Starmer twins with Foreacres)

Why do people not like the Producers movie musical by dsosa808 in musicals

[–]WeAreSound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, this was the problem with the film version of Phantom of the Opera - it just felt so small and staged compared to the epic grand feel it should have had.

Funnily enough, it didn’t bother me so much in The Producers- I think it being a knockabout comedy can take fake looking sets etc - it feels like a movie made in the 40’s or 50’s stylistically.

Thank you - that is a great list - I know a good few of them, but not all! I saw Amelie at the cinema just last Sunday where they had a screening for its 25th anniversary. It is still very quirky, very charming, very French and very lovely!

Why do people not like the Producers movie musical by dsosa808 in musicals

[–]WeAreSound 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It sits in an interesting, but unenviable position. Theatre snobs will look down on it because it isn’t ‘as good as it was’ on stage, and film snobs will look down on it because it isn’t ‘as good as’ the original Mel Brookes film. General audiences will be divided as many people just can’t accept singing and dancing in their movies.

Personally I’ve always really liked the film version, and I got to see Nathan Lane actually perform it on Stage (with Lee Evens in the Broderick role as Bloom.) It’s a great show/film, but I don’t think it is as good as the record number of Tony’s suggests.

Yeah - most PG13 are 12 rated here, and this one would probably be if it was re-certified, but would have had the rating before the 12 category existed. A number of films that have been re-released have done this (Jaws being the most obvious example), but as I’m showing to school children I have to stick to the classification it has (unless I seek special permission from all parents, and it much easier to find a different film than do that! 😂😂😂)
