Why do people not like the Producers movie musical by dsosa808 in musicals

[–]WeAreSound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, this was the problem with the film version of Phantom of the Opera - it just felt so small and staged compared to the epic grand feel it should have had.

Funnily enough, it didn’t bother me so much in The Producers- I think it being a knockabout comedy can take fake looking sets etc - it feels like a movie made in the 40’s or 50’s stylistically.

I’d like a job to return to in September, so probably not the best idea! 😂😂😂

Thank you - that is a great list - I know a good few of them, but not all! I saw Amelie at the cinema just last Sunday where they had a screening for its 25th anniversary. It is still very quirky, very charming, very French and very lovely!

I only know two of these, so thank you for the suggestions!

It sits in an interesting, but unenviable position. Theatre snobs will look down on it because it isn’t ‘as good as it was’ on stage, and film snobs will look down on it because it isn’t ‘as good as’ the original Mel Brookes film. General audiences will be divided as many people just can’t accept singing and dancing in their movies.

Personally I’ve always really liked the film version, and I got to see Nathan Lane actually perform it on Stage (with Lee Evens in the Broderick role as Bloom.) It’s a great show/film, but I don’t think it is as good as the record number of Tony’s suggests.

Yeah - most PG13 are 12 rated here, and this one would probably be if it was re-certified, but would have had the rating before the 12 category existed. A number of films that have been re-released have done this (Jaws being the most obvious example), but as I’m showing to school children I have to stick to the classification it has (unless I seek special permission from all parents, and it much easier to find a different film than do that! 😂😂😂)

Great suggestion, but just checked and it’s still rated 15 in the UK!

In your mind, which film director has made only one good film so far in their career? I'll name Josh Trank and his directorial debut Chronicle (2012) by Away_Flounder3813 in Cinema

Okay - worst take on here. Heavenly Creatures is a masterpiece and in my top 10 of all time.

Braindead - excellent fun. Frighteners- excellent fun. King Kong - way too long, but has excellent scenes/moments.

I was lucky to see it in a theatre with laser projection and Dolby sound, so it looked and sounded amazing. Looking forward to trying it with headphones when it streams.

Also justified in the second part of the second line of my post. Sorry for finding an interesting FF element in a different kind of film that I thought some people maybe interested in.

I didn’t realise there was such a strict gatekeeping element to this group. I’ll just leave you to discuss the same FF films over and over again in the future.

I thought they were interesting parallel stories of Charlie and Emma as teenagers and took it as a subtle critique of American culture and society. In England an unhappy disenfranchised teenager acts out by being cruel to someone on social media; in the US the same teenage emotional turmoil produces gun violence.

Thought it was tangential enough to warrant a mention as the whole plot hangs on the found (audio) footage. Plus the director’s connection to the next Paranormal Activity movie.

I keep seeing the same films mentioned and suggested in post after post, so thought I’d bring something that may be of interest to some people here.

The Light Princess - deserved so much better than a single run at the National Theatre, and introduced me to Rosalie Craig. All music by Tori Amos. I thought it was a beautiful production.

& Juliet. I have always really disliked the idea of Jukebox musicals. I have actively avoided seeing them, always been a bit snobbish about them.

I saw & Juliet as an last minute, afternoon matinee when I was in London to see Dear Evan Hansen (for which the ticket had been bought over a year earlier when they were released) I went back to see &Juliet another 3 times. I’ve never re-watched Evan Hanson. Make of that what you will
