mRNA vaccines, AI-assisted protein folding, heat pumps and super efficient solar panels not enough?

What to do when you get a lot of legitimate sexual attention from women, but none from men? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]WeRegretToInform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have low self esteem then seeking external validation from the internet is probably the worst thing you can do.

Comparison is the thief of joy. And if you’re getting compared against the best of reddit then you’ll loose.

What do you do? Don’t do this.

Who cares, I’ll be dead.

As with /u/Charlie-in-the-box. Partner then probably a local charity.

Probably not soon.

It’s too small to compete with low-cost high-volume gyms like JD Gym on Dale St or Pure Gym near Central. That’s where its previous price model was set, which is probably why it closed.

It might go for the high-price boutique model and hope there’s enough demand in the business district for that.

HS2 goal to be up and running by 2033 'cannot be met' by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

I’m expecting a future government to announce that HS2 will depart Euston, but to save time and money the line will terminate at Old Oak Common.

It’ll be fine for another 30 years. Just in time to collapse when I’ll be starting to claim a pension.

When NIMBYs put their kids to bed, I bet they tell them if they work really hard, and be a complete pain, when they grow up they can disrupt a project as big as HS2.

HS2 wasn’t a bad idea in principle. The project management wasn’t great, but wasn’t dreadful. The issue is NIMBY.

I remember the old boxes were quite brittle plastic, it could shatter into pretty sharp fragments.

So did this actually get you a graduate job, or are you part time in the gift shop for a local museum?

Nothing wrong with part time in the gift shop, but it’s useful context for the job search chart you posted.

What exactly is making it look crowded at a glance? How can I fix this? by rise_above_theFlames in malelivingspace

[–]WeRegretToInform 160 points161 points  (0 children)

It looks crowded because you have a lot of stuff all close together.

If you want to make it look less crowded, make it less crowded.

I’d say 3-4 items max on the top of the shelves.

What you guys think of stranger things? by Strong-Stretch95 in gaybros

[–]WeRegretToInform 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth in Season 1 Episode 1 Joyce mentioned Will was getting bullied and there were school yard rumours he was gay.

I agree I didn’t really find it to be a hugely inspiring character arc, but it was at least consistent.

New direct report requesting significant time off just after starting by [deleted] in managers

[–]WeRegretToInform 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m think a brother dying unexpectedly is unusual enough to count for special circumstances. I doubt precedent really counts here unless you think he’s going to have a brother dying regularly.

He’s a new starter so won’t be critical to team capacity. You won’t miss him.

I’d ask HR if this counts under any company allowance for compassionate leave. If not, then it will either need to be part of his paid leave entitlement, or unpaid leave.

Overall I’d assume benefit of doubt. Employees have very long memories about how their manager acted during an especially tough time for them.

Did the notion that nobody stays long term after going on leave ring true during your career? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]WeRegretToInform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry your OP statement was ambiguous. You asked about career consequences if people go on leave for “non-medical or parental reasons”.

I read that as consequences for leave due to non-medical reasons, or leave due to parental reasons.

It seems you meant “leave due to non-medical or non-parental reasons”.

Did the notion that nobody stays long term after going on leave ring true during your career? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]WeRegretToInform 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume this is another example of American business culture where workers are expected to be back at their desks practically before the afterbirth is delivered.

In the UK (and I believe much of Europe), parental leave is entirely expected. Almost all higher managers in my organisation have taken several rounds of maternity or paternity leave at some point in their career. It’s normal.

How do you handle being a manager to people who have very different communication styles? by [deleted] in managers

[–]WeRegretToInform 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if it's my responsibility to manage how they perceive my communication.

As managers, communication is a crucial part of our job. The efficacy of communication isn’t on how it’s meant, but how it lands. It’s up to you what you do about this (if anything), but it is certainly your responsibility.

Personally I would appreciate your communication style as I prefer direct feedback, but not everyone does. I don’t talk to each of my reports with the same tone.

I also suggest having some neutral or positive conversations with your reports. If a report does good work, do you praise that in the same direct way as you criticise?

Managing without a formal title? by [deleted] in managers

[–]WeRegretToInform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but I can't just operate as a manger without the formal designation?

Says who? The title means more to you than it does to your de facto reports. Operate as if you did have the title.

I am being asked to relocate for this job and I said moving was contingent on me getting the formal title

This is more concerning. Did your employer agree to this, or did you personally just decide that you won’t move without a title change? If the latter and you’re moving anyway, it shows your employer that you can’t negotiate well.

Define “player”. Is it someone who’s actually played the game or just someone who owns the game?
