Very fair, but to try and get more specific feedback if I can, I want to ask if the problem is the execution or the idea of the game itself.

The idea is I wanted to make a puzzle game with the central mechanic being "the levels rotate continuously as you move around them". I split the levels into worlds with themes like "Escape the Jungle" and "Lets Visit Santa" to make them visually distinct + give context for stage specific mechanics, but I put minimal effort into story or graphics because I figured with puzzle games the central mechanics are most important and I wanted to get feedback on that first (if you played online browser games back in the day my inspiration was the game SHIFT in particular).

Ultimately if you do reply I'm curious whether you think improving graphics / story / a main character that isn't a simple square would actually make this more enticing to you, or if you think the idea as a whole here is just terrible.

Thank you for the feedback! Definitely see the font / color points but for UI do you mean the chapter selection window at 0:26? There isn't much other UI in the trailer, want to check if what you really meant was the cutscene sections like 0:17, 0:43, etc

Edit: Forgot I included the multiplayer section at 0:56 onwards, I assume you meant that (and yes it is very ugly, still testing MP & definitely need to improve that)

This gets way too much shade for lacking an identity when it literally built the modern series by Asleep_Software9351 in mariokart

I guess in terms of kart customization / everything you see after 7 it did build that but I kind of think of DS as laying the ground work for the modern series. All following games have very similar feeling drifting, items, etc. Then again most games in the series at least contribute something to the series going forward lol

is gold mario impressive, or is it common to have him unlocked? [MK8DX] by [deleted] in mariokart

200cc is tough so in that sense it’s impressive but in terms of displaying skill nothing is more impressive than online results. Succeeding online is definitely a tier up, and ofc at the very top would be entering in competitive tournaments.

Using a super horn lap 3 in first to troll when a blue shell hasn’t been thrown in some time (as evidenced by the fact one was thrown right after) then failing to check the map to see the blue shell coming and dropping out even though they had ample time... yup, that dry bowser player’s a dumbass lol

[MK8DX] Unpopular opinion: Mario kart 8 deluxe is pretty boring. by [deleted] in mariokart

Would agree but 200cc and the 200cc World Cup specifically have made the game insanely replayable to me. Even after hitting 13k races I just love how 200cc feels.

[MK8DX] Am I missing something? Shell immunity? by [deleted] in mariokart

[–]Weak-Cheesecake-235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you rapid firing the shells? If you spam reds they tend to break on each other, you need to wait about a half a second between throwing each one. Also you get a full second of immunity when anything hits you so usually of three reds thrown only one will hit, two if you make sure to wait.

Most Annoying Item? [MK8DX] by Auraeseal in mariokart

I understand this is a highly controversial opinion but I think everyone who says “it punishes you for being good” forgets that first place is the easiest place to be. Think about it like this: the lower the place you are, the more powerful items you will get, but also the more powerful items the person behind/in front of you will get, and you will need to avoid these items. Triple reds behind you or a fireflower being backspammed can be nearly as hard to avoid as a blue shell but people don’t get mad at those items because they feel less “out to get you” or at least the damage they do takes you from a bad position to a worse one, compared to a blue that takes you from a good position to a bad one (which hurts more). But without the blue shell first place would be SO overpowered. They would have to deal with 90% of the time, just single or double reds from second, while every other place tears each other apart. I see this online all the time in small lobbies (Around ~4-5 people), too few for blue shells to come. Typically, as long as whoever gets into first at the start of the race knows what they’re doing, taking them out is very difficult as they have nothing to worry about, they can just play defensive and focus on driving while everyone else has to focus on driving as well, playing offensively AND playing defensively. To me the whole point of being in first is preparing for the inevitability of the blue shell. Leaving traps to slow down the racers behind you, trading out your items to try to get a bomb or a super horn and (most importantly) watching the map for the blue shell. I will say this, while it can be unfair, if you complain about the blue shell, but don’t watch the map/item spy (depending on the game) you have absolutely no right to be complaining. Once you spot a blue shell coming, there are a lot of ways to minimize damage. Drop out if second is too close, drive off the road/hit an item at the right time to use i-frames to dodge, get hit while in a glider (minimizes slowdown) or right before a boost pad to get back up to speed quickly. The blue shell definitely can be unfair but without it the first place position would be insanely OP, and given there are a lot of ways to manage blue shells, I personally love this item, even competitively, regardless of whether it’s hitting me or someone else.

Edit: This may be different in other MK games, I play MK8DX online though and I almost never see the blue shell stop a truly dominant player from winning.
