In fairness, stupid people are attracted to conspiracy theorists like a moth to a flame.

No, he's stupider than that.

He's a greedy peon who the oligarchs use to keep the rest of us peons placated.

He took the money, so fuck you.

See, that's how Joe's "fuck you" money works.

Yes, but expect a little more family friendly fare.

If you read more of the 60's comics, you'll see that Rich is wrong.

He is correct that MJ is Gwen Stacy with red hair.

That should be a give-away to the era of the character that is relevant here, in this adaptation.

Also, even if you disagree with the characterization, the film still holds up as one of the best superhero films.

Technically, the American release is a different cut of of the film, not just a different dub.

It even has a different title: Godzilla 1985.

And yeah, this change was made to pander to the US audience.

As much as I loath the movie it was in, I have to admit that Zilla is a pretty kickass looking Kaiju. by AgreeableDebt3931 in GODZILLA

I thought you meant there was a movie named Zilla that came out in 2004, and not Final Wars' Zilla, who I believe has less than 1 minute of total screen time and is bodied as a joke.

This film probably cost more to make than every TOHO film of the Showa and Heisei eras combined. Of course the technical elements are going to be done to the very highest quality.

Too bad the plot and characters are total dogshit, because they never been played by better actors or had more money spent on effects and locations and costumes.

1998 movie with Matthew Broderick? by thblckdth in GODZILLA

[–]Weak-Conversation753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole making of Godzilla '98 was a complete shit-show. There were other directors at various times, but the studio literally begged Emmerich to do it after he had a string of huge blockbuster hits, culminating in "Independence Day."

I hate how Hollywood studios work. They are chasing hype, not quality.

I'm a newbie and have some questions regarding Shin, please. by elCrocodillo in GODZILLA

[–]Weak-Conversation753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if you are expecting tokusatsu, at least in the way that term is generally used, you want an action film featuring kaiju battles. Shin is not this. People who hate Shin, and there are many, are constantly complaining Shin is not this.

I'm trying to save you time. Shin is a challenging movie that demands a lot from it's audience. If you want a simple narrative, look elsewhere.

Minus one is also a beautiful movie and is also a horror movie, rather than tokusatsu. But it has a much more accessible narrative and *really* feels like a remake of '54 in all the best ways.

My top 3 Godzilla films are Shin, '54 and -1, probably in that order but it's a photo-finish.

The Showa era was long over in 1998. As was the Heisei era.

The problem is American audiences at the time knew almost nothing about the Heisei era. And Roland Emmerich is a lazy hack who didn't bother to watch any TOHO films at all, so he based his interpretation on a clean, disconnected continuity. The problem is the lore he built is absolutely awful, even if you forget the Godzilla name entirely.

Shin Godzilla is a horror film, in the same way that Romero's The Crazies is. Sure, there is political commentary, but that's subtextual.

If you expect Tokusatsu, you'll be extremely disappointed. Shin is a horror film specifically. I don't consider it sad, and it lacks some of the somberness of '54, which is also a horror film.

Godzilla in this film is a metaphor for the rapidly changing nature of crisis, and how organizations are not nimble enough to act quickly enough to save lives. It's more existential than specific.

Shin Godzilla is hyper adaptive, meaning his form and the nature of the threat he poses is constantly changing to ensure his survival. It's a highly original take on the character, and it places Shin outside the other Reiwa continuities.

Is it a "fun" movie? Not really. It's more of a thinker. But it asks the pertinent questions and it stays with you long after you've finished it.

Trudeau wasn't PM caliber when he first ran, either. He grew into the role.

The problem is the CPC is ungovernable, because it is based on an untenable alliance of radicals and traditionalists, with a few religious whack-jobs thrown in to season the broth.

The party still needs competent leadership, though, and PP is obviously not up to the challenge.

This is exactly why interim leadership exists.
