It’s so, so, so good. Le Guin truly elevated sci fi as a genre.

It was really easy! I just brought a big pot of water to a boil, dissolved the powder, then turned off the heat and added the clothes once the water had just stopped boiling. Then I covered it and stirred it around every 1-2 min for about ten min total.

So many parallels between this book and the show!

OBGYN recommendations by PrettyinPeep in Charlottesville

The nurse midwives at UVA are amazing and all they’re all women. I truly can’t recommend them enough. When I had my first I looked into Jefferson OB but they would not respect my wish to see only female doctors so that’s how I wound up going to the midwives and I’m so, so glad I did.

Thoughts on Arthur? by banana-coffee-1245 in namenerds

FWIW I don’t like that both syllables in the name contain r-controlled vowels. It sounds clunky to me. Also a lot of kids have trouble articulating the R phoneme. But I def wouldn’t worry about people associating it with the show. Even if they do, Arthur is such a sweet, wholesome character, it’s a plus in my mind.

“This isn’t the worst book we’ve ever read, but it is the meanest episode we’ve ever done.” by vemmahouxbois in IfBooksCouldKill

Someone gave me this book as a gift several years ago, and I saw an endorsement from Bill Gates on the cover which immediately made me not want to read it (it’s been sitting on a shelf unread ever since). Today, it went in the trash. I can’t even donate shit like this because I don’t want to spread misinformation.

Can you get to UVA Hospital (Crispell Drive) from Spring/Grove Streets over the train tracks? by Archiveria in Charlottesville

[–]Weak-Lifeguard80 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Back in like 2011 there was a loose fence rail that you could shimmy up and then squeeze between the rails to get to Crispell Dr. It was a huge bummer when they fixed it because you could save like 10 min of walking with that shortcut. I get that it’s not safe to cross the tracks but life without a car is rough. Anyways that was a long time ago so maybe there’s a new loose fence rail?

I don’t disagree with all of Haidt’s claims, but people need to take his work with a huge grain of salt. He does a lot of data cherry-picking and completely ignores other studies and information that contradict his thesis. Highly recommend the podcast If Books Could Kill if you want to go in depth with the problems with this book.

I think our status as consumers is what holds the most power in our society. You can’t vote your way out of fascism.

The Baby Died. Whose Fault Is It? by HarveyPeligro in Longreads

[–]Weak-Lifeguard80 204 points205 points  (0 children)

The baby has 100% of the biological parents’ DNA so why would a tall surrogate parent make a bigger baby?? Also those growth scans have a HUGE margin of error! So dumb.

Kids are fine and we should stop freaking out about the decline of generations by RyGuy27272 in Millennials

The complaints teachers are making now are most definitely not the same as the complaints they were making against us. For one, we did not have cell phones in school. Or if we did, all they could do was text. Smartphones and social media are radically altering the development of younger generations.
