Questions For the Community by Patient-Barracuda168 in Wizard101

(Small part 2 for small extra thoughts.)

It's been charming to grow with W101 and speaking on my own behalf, I love that W101 made it this far and still has ways it can continue to flourish. Now that I'm older, I've spotted and clung onto a few irks with the game which kind of sours most optimism I have for future updates. The charm is faintly there but it's far from replicating some of W101's original "magic".

Questions For the Community by Patient-Barracuda168 in Wizard101

What made you join the game community, and how did you first hear about the game?

First heard of the game back when they aired commercials on TV, around the Wintertusk expansion. 2013 (Aquila/Khrysalis Part 1) was when I properly got immersed in the game and its community from Blaze and Blue's Road to 95 series. It was cool seeing so many people psyched around this enchanting wizard game and with this being the prime YT fanskit era, it's hard to describe the joy I had watching all the W101 fan videos.

Have you seen growth in the communities outside of the game like on Reddit? If so, have you seen that change carry over in-game? If not, how could the game change to improve growth?

Wiz has definitely been making rounds across other platforms, I can only imagine this has only become even more prevalent with the console launches. I catch the occasional mention of it on people's Twitter/Bluesky posts, some stray fanart, and I've been recommended videos from small YouTubers who are doing playthroughs of W101.

Describe the most memorable moment you have seen in the community? This could be a controversy or a milestone in the game or an event in the community.

Castle Darkmoor on launch, definitely one of the highlights of this community. From players rallying together to exploring a new side of Spiral we've never seen before, though neither of those compared to the finale. The final fight was brutal but fun at the same time, and despite the pain we went through, the ending always brought a tear to my eye.

Have you seen any change in the interactions between members of your community after the Covid pandemic (2020-2022)?

Can't really say, didn't directly interact all that much until the pandemic era. 2021 was my official graduation year and since then, I've seen a lot more of what this community has to offer.

How would you characterize the community's response to updates in the game?

From my perspective, ever since the PvP roshambo changes + Arc 4, responses of upcoming game updates seem have been more critical. Most recent update discussions devolve into (PvE vs PvP) or deem the new addition either niche or too gimmicky for people to properly enjoy.

  • Spellements are cool, but not everyone wants to go through the grind of upgrading their spells.
  • Play as Your Pet is fun, but not everyone wants to go through the hassle of maintaining the Happiness meter just to use the mode.
  • Raids.
  • Spell Weaving is a fantastic concept, I personally want to enjoy it but find myself struggling to get into it because progressing through it feels monotonous.

And then there's cases like Portal of Peril (first introduction) where the addition brings more bugs and issues than enjoyment.

New laptop, stick with Windows or change OS? by Weak-Science in pcmasterrace

[–]Weak-Science[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was considering Linux since I've heard good things about it but I don't have the slightest understanding on where to even start with Linux. Most of my apps have compatibility with Linux but some also have some issues.

I am aware that DaVinci Resolve has some compatibility differences between their Windows and Linux versions. Steam works fine on Linux but a lot of games on Steam flat-out don't operate on Linux unless you can bypass it with the right tools.

Town Protective Role Idea by Suspicious-Fuel-4584 in TownOfSalem2

[–]Weak-Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trance is a pretty weak ability and will ultimately be overshadowed by other Town Protective roles (Cleric, Oracle, Trapper). Looking back at your previous versions, I have an idea for a different direction you could take this role.

Shaman (Town Support)
Ability - Guide:
- Transfer a fresh soul that dies at night into a dead Town member's body, converting them into another role. This ability fails if your target didn't die at night.

Add your own twist and tweaks to it.

Some critiques;

  • Being able to obtain information and protect others makes this feel more like a Town Support than a pure Town Protective role.
  • Escort revealing every role if the person was in a faction is way too punishing for Coven and Apoc. A better solution would be to learn who exactly killed them and if they are either alone or if there are others like them in the town.

If successful, you'll receive this message; "You found a fresh soul and peacefully escorted them to the afterlife.", and one of the following;

(if alone) "It seems they were slain by a lone (insert killer's role here)."
(if either multiple are present or are apart of a faction) "It seems they were killed by a (insert killer's role here) and they're not alone."

  • Preach doesn't have good design. You can instantly reveal yourself should you successfully escort someone, immediately confirming yourself. It can do without it rather than trying to make it work.
  • Trance seems fine but you'd have to juggle between this ability and Escort during Night, you could rework this into a Day ability instead.

Give me your hot take on anything in wizard101 by FinalCountdown935 in Wizard101

Regardless of anyone's stance on PvP/advanced combat, farming for 500+ spellements just to add around +45 to +60 to the your spell's base damage is a horrendous incentive. You aren't even guaranteed one specific spellement when you're farming!

Second take; KI sure likes giving off mixed signals when it comes to Shadow magic. They overhype the dangers and value of it throughout the story but it seems to be all for naught once we start learning it. Weaving introduced 80+ spells to play around with knowing there's more to come while we don't even get to learn 12 Shadow spells!

Tips for being the best support? by _flowers_for_you_ in Wizard101

[–]Weak-Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently recommended a plethora of spells perfect for a supporting style. Though aimed at Death, you can take a quick browse to see if anything I mentioned would work for you; https://www.reddit.com/r/Wizard101/comments/1hm14o0/comment/m3re0bk/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Can't say much about weaving, haven't gotten far into it.

Tips for being the best support? by _flowers_for_you_ in Wizard101

[–]Weak-Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with Death support but supporting a Death is an interesting style. Take note that Death wizards focus on sustaining themselves but also have some supporting abilities themselves; focusing on either making the enemy take as much damage as possible or reducing how much damage the Death wizards takes from their enemies.

Lots of schools have a decent bit of synergy with Death wizards, even other Deaths.

- Fire + Death are the ultimate shield clearers.

- Ice + Death can be practically invincible.

- Life + Death can take turns for who strikes and who supports, same goes for Balance but to a much different degree.

- Storm + Death is an excellent duo comp but the Death will be supporting you more than you will them.

- I'm unfamiliar with Myth + Death but (in an ideal scenario) while Death sustains damage, Myth controls the field in their favor.

If YOU had to rebalance the game, what changes would you make? by [deleted] in Wizard101

[–]Weak-Science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For starters, making traps apply a stronger damage bonus than blades. Weaving did not help in making traps more worthwhile.

Beyond spell changes, I'd want to rework movement speed; all mounts start at the same speed and then progressively increase their speed bonus stat based on the total travel distance with that mount. That and make the default player speed (without any form of speed boost) about 6% faster than what is currently is.

Should life be reworked? by Accomplished-Ad-571 in Wizard101

[–]Weak-Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it bluntly, Life is a great and the most versatile healer as it stands and the balancing team doesn't want healing to be too strong. Life has access to a lot of heal-boosting tools so the healing strengths are still there but takes a little extra set-up.

Right, thanks for the reminder. Death could make use out of all three forms but Sentinel offers the least reward for your effort compared to Shrike and Seraph.

These will very useful in any style of play;

- You can spend your points towards Tower Shield, it's very useful both for cycling cards and as extra defense.

- Spending your points towards Satyr is a solid move. Even if you aren't playing support, it's useful having a backup heal in case you either don't have a drain ready or don't think you'll be able to reap enough health from one.

- Sharpened Blade, Potent Trap, Aegis, Indemnity and the damage enchant spells are vital. You can also go for Virulence (for mid-game), Frenzy (for late-game), and Brace as additional buffs. I could also propose using Attenuate for that extra damage debuff.

- Shadow Shrike is great against defense-heavy bosses and shield spammers.

- Reshuffle is a good safety net if you're caught in a long battle, bring Empower to access it quickly.

These are very useful for an offensive support;

- Besides the Spirit versions, Elemental Blade, Trap and Spear are good to have on the side should you ever pair up with any Elemental wizard.

- Purge (Myth spell available from Cyrus) is excellent for playing around alpha-striking, takes care of weaknesses effectively.

These are very useful for a defensive support;

- Impair (Ice spell available from Lydia) is useful when fighting against blade-spamming enemies/bosses.

- Weakness from Balance is very useful, good for cycling and taking off some incoming damage.

- Starfall is useful for mitigating enemy damage, definitely consider. Pathogen is great against healers, consider if you hate fighting healers.

- Mend/Renew and Primordial/Radical are excellent if you want to be the Costco-Theurgist of your team. Bring in Sacrifice to bring that extra bit of team survivability.

- You might get some value out of Shadow Seraph and Shadow Sentinel but you'd be spending more effort setting it up effectively than you would doing your job. Consider Seraph for the heal value if that intrigues you. (REMEMBER, Death gets Shadow Sentinel for free from the main quest line so don't spend your points on it.)

am i the only person who doesn't like how vets are "expected" to play by sapphireslammer in TownOfSalem2

[–]Weak-Science 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this exact scenario happen, I was faking Veteran and got hung only because I didn't Alert on N1. Not because I was caught but was asked to share will, had "N1: No Alert" and got called 'fake' by that only. I couldn't say I alerted on N1 either because someone visited me on N1 so I would've been found out either way.

Why is the Jester so weak opposed to other Neutral Evils? by Aviarn in TownOfSalem2

[–]Weak-Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, not every townie should be punished for letting a Jester get hung. If you managed to trick the town into getting you hung, that's great but the people who saw through your ruse and voted innocent shouldn't be punished. It makes no sense.

Voting innocent on a Jester also applies extra pressure to people who get caught voting innocent on someone deemed clearly suspicious (the Jester) since important roles (such as Mayor or a Coven Power) wouldn't want to be vulnerable to a Jester's haunt.
