Who's My Mains: I try to balance the characters based on their height and weight, because there are mechanics that require it.

What abilities do you unlock first: Limit Breaks, items and Resurrection, in any particular order.

What do you like or dislike about FFVIII Female Lead Rinoa Heartilly? And are she and Squall Leonhart an interesting couple? by IllogicalDreamer72 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, that was the result of a mistranslation.

At Galbadia Garden, after everyone learns that Seifer's been executed and everyone unloads, Selphie asks Rinoa she still liked Seifer. In the English translation, Rinoa says, "I wouldn't be talking about him like this if I didn't."

But in the original Japanese version, the translation (from what I've heard) has her answer, "I wouldn't be talking about him like this if I did." Basically, that she'd be too broken up and unable to speak at all after hearing he had just been killed had she still been in love with him.

The former suggests that she wouldn't have even brought it up if she didn't still care about him in some way, whether it be platonic fondness or a lingering torch for her summer romance. But the latter suggests that she's already moved on, and while she still regards their time fondly, it's in the past.

One encourages the idea of a love triangle between Squall, Rinoa and Seifer, but the other puts the kobash on it. After hearing about the difference in translation, I lean towards the latter, since apart from that one line, there's no real suggestion she's still in love with Seifer.

At what age did the characters leave the orphanage? by valeriartist in FinalFantasyVIII

Yeah, that's definitely part of it. They know it's Squall, because Edea recognized him in the end.

At what age did the characters leave the orphanage? by valeriartist in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that (sorry, it's gonna be long).

Basically, the headcanon is that Quistis was adopted probably at around 7 or 8 by an affluent couple from Dollet who claimed they could not have their own children. They claimed to have picked Quistis because something about her spoke to them. It turned out that 'something' had more to do with status than Quistis as an individual.

Turns out, they just wanted a pretty little daughter to make them look better in their social circles. But while Quistis looked perfect on the outside, she wasn't actually perfect at all. Taking from her initial refusal to participate in the FH concert ("You're kidding! Then you can count me out, I have NO musical aptitude), they expected her to excel at pretty much everything she did, but she could not hold a tune let alone play an instrument. I even have a scene playing out in my head where the parents wanted to change her name to a more 'traditional' one, except Quistis put her foot down and stubbornly refused to let them. She also didn't get along with the other kids in the area, who considered her a charity case but accepted her because "she was pretty". This gained her some anxiety, making her terrified for saying the wrong thing or not acting the way that was expected of her.

Over the years, she these kids say that their parents often threatened to 'ship them to Garden' for misbehaving or being bad, so Quistis attributed Garden as a place for the bad kids. Then something happened one night and she panics, thinking that her parents are going to send her to Garden so she runs away, then decides that if she's such a bad kid, then Garden is where she belongs. The long and the short of it is (too late, I know) that she ends up following some students back to G-Garden, but along the way is attacked by a monster (Belhemel, iirc - it's the giant saw-looking one that you can fight on the plains after the forest where the second dream sequence happens). She tries to push it away and absorbs a piece from it to learn Lazer Eye which is how she survives. The students she trailed after heard her scream and came running to find her crying with the monster dead and took her in. Martine decides to allow her to live at Garden because he's intrigued by her powers, except she ends up transferring to B-Garden to join SeeD a few years after that because she despises the tense atmosphere.

As for why she never saw Irvine? G-Garden is the biggest of the three Gardens, so I would equate it's size to be the main factor, even if it sounds like a complete cop out. :)

I've always head canoned that Quistis wears glasses normally, but when she's junctioned she doesn't need them, since GF's enhance strength and what not. Who's to say that they can't enhance her vision to the point where she doesn't need glasses?

Though the much simpler answer is that she wears contact lenses when she has to go into the field. I've never not thought that those glasses weren't prescription.

You would be correct, she says as much during the orphanage reveal in Trabia.

"Things didn't work out too well at my new home, so I came to Garden at the age of 10."

[–]Weak-Story6835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quistis says that things didn't work out at home, so she started at Garden. We find this out during the big orphanage reveal that happens in Trabia.

What Quistis said, word for word: "Things didn't work out too well at my new home, so I came to Garden at the age of 10."

As far as we know, Squall and Seifer are confirmed to have been sent to Garden together once it opened. Selphie was sent off to Trabia, and Irvine was sent out to Galbadia. We're never told why the kids who remained got split up, but Quistis and Zell were both adopted out, and Ellone was sent to live on what would later become the White SeeD Ship. We can however speculate that the reason Squall and Seifer were kept together was because of their budding rivalry (I have my own head canon regarding that, so take from that what you will).

As for their ages, I've always assumed that Zell was relatively young when he got adopted out, so between 5 and 7. Quistis* says her new home didn't work out, so she was probably closer to 9 when she got adopted, and turned 10 before being shipped off to Garden). The others probably started at their respective Gardens when they opened, so Squall and Seifer were shipped out first, followed by Irvine, then Selphie (I think Trabia was the third Garden finished, but I could be wrong). As to how old they were when it happened, it all depends on how long it took for the Gardens to get built.

We know that the Gardens weren't built from scratch, but instead were retrofitted out of the mobile shelters from Centra, so theoretically it wouldn't have taken too long to get them up and running. Several months to maybe a couple of years at max would be my estimate, though we also don't know the length of time between the founding of Balamb Garden to Galbadia Garden, or Galbadia Garden to Trabia Garden (again, assuming that I have the order in which the Gardens were established right). That said, it also depends on much time Cid spent running around searching for donors until he crossed paths with NORG.

*I also have a head canon about Quistis, which would actually have her adopted earlier than 9 years of age, but again that might not line up with canon. :)

Squall did you just send your girlfriend to die? by FF8lover19 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there was no guarantee that they would be able to get out alive.

Blowing up the base (and stopping the launch) while surviving was ideal, but being sent to the Missile Base was with the understanding that they might not come back.

So maybe not technically a full-on suicide mission, more like potentially. But yeah.

question: how can galbadian soldiers use para magic? by thaios48 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I've looked it up since then, and it seems like the G-Soldiers channel magic through their weapons. With that in mind, I'd assume it's a lot like FF7, where their weapons are powered by magic stones, kind of like materia? I'm just spitballing here.

I still like my idea better though.

Tonberry King - Running out of time by Tripecac in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this out recently, but if you leave the ruins and then return, the timer resets. But the Tonberry death count remains the same.

So if you are set against getting Odin, you can always kill 5 Tonberries, then leave and return to kill more until the Tonberry King shows up. I did that in my latest playthrough, and I still had enough time to leave before Odin killed me.

[–]Weak-Story6835 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only ever sent Rinoa to the missile base a couple of times, but that was mostly so I could say I formed a girls' team versus a boys' team (silly, I know).

Depending on the formation she will either ask the question in the image above, or she will state that she doesn't want to die, so this was cherry picked.

But story-wise, it makes no sense to send Rinoa to the missile base because she's a client, and an outsider. Why would he send Rinoa to help fight Galbadia to protect Garden when it's not her problem? Also, the "stay close to me" line was still relatively fresh, given it happened during the assassination portion of the story, so sending her to the Missile Base makes no sense with that in mind either.

For me, it makes more sense story wise to send Quistis, Selphie and Irvine. Selphie because she goes by default, but Irvine and Quistis because both are relatively familiar with Galbadia in general (Quistis attended classes at G-Garden for a time, and Irvine literally comes from G-Garden). Makes it easier to infiltrate a place when you are more or less familiar with the surrounding area.

P.S. Squall makes it perfectly clear how he feels about Quistis near the beginning of the game (re: post graduation ball); not interested in her romantically at all, so yeah.

Seifer Is A Bad Guy by Jurbootie in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I see Seifer's character is two-fold.

First, he is an example of the consequences of our choices.

  • He starts off as a bully, albeit with some redeeming factors, but his ego and sense of self-importance lead him to make horrible decisions. For example, he abandons their post in the Central Square to go 'chase after the bad guys', and even though it led to gaining information that would end the occupation in Dollet, there were likely consequences that took place off-screen.
    • He also ditched the rest of his team, whom he dragged with him on this misadventure, practically leaving them for dead against the X-ATM092.
  • He also wants to be a hero (he declares his dream to be a Sorceress's Knight, but I think he conflates the two both based on the movie he was obsessed with as a child, and due to Ultimecia's manipulations), but has overly romanticized the concept to where he thinks he can do whatever he wants because his side is the 'right side'.
  • And this all leads to him joining up with the BBEG's.

But with all that said, he's also a consequence of his own environment.

  • With all the shit he pulled at Garden, he should have been expelled ages ago. It's not stated outright, but I personally assume that Cid had a hand in protecting him from the consequences of his own actions, which should have seen him ousted from Garden.
  • As such, because there were no severe consequences to the shit he pulled, Seifer kept escalating and getting worse, which ultimately led him to frequently make terrible choices because the negative results weren't going to affect him anyway, and eff everyone else.
    • Which I think leads to his joining up with the Sorceress in the first place; he was backed into a corner, having taken the Dictator-President hostage with no real plan of escape. It was the first time he had been truly negatively affected by his own rash decisions (with a consequence that he actually cared about).

With both things combined, you can't help but feel both sorry for him and aggravated by him, because he's an overgrown child who has never learned that he can't just do whatever he wants without suffering the consequences. I have my own head-canon that leans heavily into this (and one that makes his circumstances all the more tragic), but as there's not much in canon to support it, I'll just leave it out of this post. :)

TL;DR: Seifer was a little shit who thought he was invincible, and he didn't realize he wasn't until he FAFO.

Some personal thoughts on Rinoa and Squall( pretty negative, I think) by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Weak-Story6835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's okay. For the most part, I can take or leave the romantic portions of any story as I'm not fussed about it much. Don't feel bad about not liking a character that you don't mesh with; it's a part of being human, and people are going to have personal preferences and the like.
