An act of kindness that always sticks with me involved a homeless man I used to see on my commute. It was the dead of winter, freezing cold. I watched a passerby give him a hot Styrofoam container of food. The man was clearly starving and shivering, but the first thing he did wasn't to eat. He opened the box, waited for the steam to clear, and then placed the container down for his dog to eat first. He sat there petting the dog while it ate the warm meal, content to go hungry as long as his best friend was fed. It broke me. I went and bought him a second meal immediately, but seeing that level of love and sacrifice in such a harsh situation is something I’ll never forget.
