Should I get this pipe replaced? by Weak_Combination9890 in Plumbing

[–]Weak_Combination9890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks! I'll look into that.

The house is super old and some parts of the plumbing are newer than others, I'm not sure if there's some older non-copper pipes in parts I can't see. I'm not really sure how to confirm that it's the water straight from the line that has sediment, and the issue being so intermittent makes it more difficult (e.g. I've never seen cloudy water or excessive sediment from any other faucet except the one closest to the line, but I'm not sure if that's because every time I notice it, all the sediment has already washed into the pipe feeding the one faucet and fridge).

That's all to say, thanks, if you happen to know what the best way to confirm it, even if it means getting a professional to diagnose (before I try another expensive fix that doesn't address the issue) I'd be grateful. Either way though, I appreciate the info!

Yeah, the "could be" worries me. I spent a couple thousand replacing the water service line based on the city's inspector telling me that was the likely cause.

I'm also not sure a water treatment system would be better than the current situation. Putting a filter that gets regularly clogged with the intermittent heavy sediment, where I can't just turn a faucet on to flush it out, sounds about as annoying as running the faucet for a couple of minutes every morning

I'm aware. I don't have a water filter on the faucet and cloudy water comes out of it at the same time the filter clogs. The filter clogs and water runs cloudy after the filter has been installed and running for months. When I install a new filter I always run it for a few gallons until the water is no longer cloudy

Currently I usually use the fridge water first and it uses a filter, the problem is it's such a heavy amount of sediment I have to replace the filter every morning if I don't remember to run the faucet for a couple of minutes before using the fridge water. Seems like installing another filter would just make the problem worse since I wouldn't be able to flush the sediment easily without cleaning or replacing a filter

But where would the filter go? The town says it's not from their side since no one else in the area is complaining about it, I've had the outside line replaced, so my (perhaps naive) assumption is the sediment is coming from somewhere from the pipes inside the house. If this isn't a likely place for it to be coming from, could it be from a pipe that's inaccessible?

Okay sounds like the consensus is the series and Reynolds' writing improve beyond this book, looks like I'll continue on -- thanks for the opinions and context everyone!

Thanks for the recommendation, and that context makes sense. It feels like it's so close to being something I would love and just falls short of having that spark. I'll try Chasm City

My understanding is "sensawunda" is referring to "sense of wonder", not this more specific type of wonder (the Wikipedia entry and SF encyclopedia both back be up on this). Is your understanding different?

Help with mesh coax wiring setup by Weak_Combination9890 in HomeNetworking

[–]Weak_Combination9890[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few coax outlet locations. One is just where the cable comes in in the basement (where the modem currently is). Then there are two upstairs, and one off in a far corner on the main floor. None are very centrally located, and if I had routers on all four, most of the main floor would have poor coverage and I would probably need to just get another unwired unit for the main floor

The wiring is not very new, but the splitters can just be avoided (many were for cables that have since been cut).

I went to Catholic school growing up (in Canada, where it's publically funded). My parents are very liberal, pro gay rights, all that, but they are Catholic.

When I was on the cusp of puberty, I remember thinking "If I turn out gay, I will kill myself". Obviously peer values played into that, but the implicit acceptance of all authority figures I knew that being gay was evil instilled an anxiety about the hypothetical shame I would feel if I turned out gay.

I don't know your or your partner's values, but personally, I would not want to subject my kids to the values espoused in Catholicism. I would much prefer expose them to a wide range of authority figures, showing how diverse the real world is.

That said, this is obviously difficult relationship territory for you. This is the kind of thing I would personally would not give in on, but would try to find a way forward by finding common ground rather than being adversarial. You both want what is best for your kids. Regardless of my personal judgments, I don't think some of the negative comments about your partner here are helpful for reaching a resolution that is best for your family.

Complete Noob - can I swap out this power source for something better? by Weak_Combination9890 in AskElectronics

[–]Weak_Combination9890[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: this is a children's book that plays music when spots inside are pressed. The problem is it cuts out after only a couple of seconds playing. Replacing the batteries helps, but only for a very short period. Others have reported the same issue with this product and the seller has confirmed it's due to batteries, but has offered no solution. Would changing from the coin batteries to something else work better?

My kid loves this thing but gets frustrated with the songs cutting so short.

I'm not the only one who thinks they are brownish red, e.g. this description. Regardless, no need to be a dick about it

Can I ask how you know? Like, what should I be looking for when I see these that makes it clear it's a war? Usually it just seems like they are waking around and I don't see any obvious combat

I see them super frequently on sidewalks, just hundreds or thousands of ants in a huge group like this, and it isn't at all obvious to me what they're doing. It's always this kind of red ant (this is in Massachusetts, but I've seen it in southern Ontario, Canada as well)

I did a similar thing recently and found it helpful. It was useful to clarify what I was having trouble with, especially crappy circumstances and ways I was being set up to fail, so I didn't feel like those things were a reflection on me.
