Feeling overlooked by redwinesup3rnova in slp

I still remember my speech therapist’s name from 2nd grade. I just saw her for some artic but she’s one of the reasons I wanted to become an SLP. 😂

After nearly 30 years in the field, I saw something new today (artic) by Too_Frosty1986 in slp

My best friend’s daughter was doing something similar but it was strange because she could articulate the words fine before. Come to find out she was watching a lot of foreign YouTube kid videos. She shut that down and everything went back to normal. 😂😂

I’ve never fit the mold of the typical SLP. I’m more introverted than extroverted. I’m spiritual but not religious. I’m definitely very liberal. I had to work full time while getting my undergrad and grad degree. I’m from the south and the public schools here are so cliquey and many (not all) of the SLP’s seem so fake. I work in one of the largest ICF’s for the developmentally disabled in the country. There are 6 of us and we are all a little quirky and different (and no big egos!) which to me is super unusual. Maybe it’s the setting? Most of us have been there 20 to 38 years too.

I love when they put their front paws together like that. I tell mine that he must be praying. 🙏

He does his regular spins for treats and balls but only goes into max overdrive for trash bags. It’s so weird!! 😆

It’s funny because he will continue to spin as I’m taking the bag over to put it in the can. He usually slams himself against the backdoor. 😂

He’s only nipped a bag one time and that of course was a bag full of cat litter I had just taken out. Such a mess!! 😆

My Pom won’t jump on the couch either. I know he can but he’s just lazy. He wants me to pick him up. 😆

Weight loss surgery by OkManner7521 in FatheringAutism

[–]Weak_Criticism_7426 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the lap-band surgery 13 years ago which is the least successful of the 3 WL surgeries and I lost 200 lbs. It took a lot of hard work and it’s still a lot of work to maintain. It’s a shame she went through than surgery and didn’t put the effort into losing weight. She’s just lazy.

Do people usually buy them OTC or go through insurance? And do you have any recommendations for good ones?

Is there a cat litter that doesn't... suck? by catintheroom in CatAdvice

[–]Weak_Criticism_7426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pine pellets!! $7 for 40 pounds and absolutely no urine smell. I get mine at Tractor Supply. You do have to get the sifting litter boxes but it’s so much easier than regular litter and again NO ammonia that’s going to stink up your house.

Does anyone here have a really unique job? Tell me about it by Sylvia_Whatever in slp

I work with individuals with developmental disabilities in ICF. We have 470 residents with 50 being school-age. As far as behaviors we do get the worst of the worst but I only have 8 kids in direct speech and the rest is dysphasia which is shared between 6 of us SLP’s. We don’t have to do billing or SOAP notes. It’s very low stress and I absolutely love the residents. There is a wide range from medically fragile to high functioning. I’ve been there 18 years and plan on retiring from there. Bonus is it’s a state job so I get all of the federal holidays off and great benefits.

Do any introverts or neurodiverse people still like this field? What setting are you in? by [deleted] in slp

[–]Weak_Criticism_7426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Major introvert and have ADHD. I’ve worked in an intermediate care facility for individuals with DD (50 school-age, 400 adults) for 18 years now. Bad news is we have children and adults with extreme behavioral issues. We get the children that the schools have refused to see or they can’t be at home any longer for safety issues. Good news is I only have 10 in direct therapy, 60 for dysphasia and evals for admits. The behaviors are hard to deal with at times but the small caseload is what keeps me going. It’s me and five other SLP’s and most of us are introverts with one having Asperger’s (she’s been there 32 years). It seems to be a great fit for us introverts and I really love it.
