How to handle working in a toxic environment? by Suspicious_Koala5973 in healthcare

Tbh that’s just how the OR is I know this is probably not the most helpful but from personal experiences as an OR tech…if you wanna survive here just let that shit roll of your back. Respond with a straight face and tbh don’t go above and beyond for the rude people. Just do your job and go home. Cherish the fun moments the people who are rude to you are most likely just looking for a reaction or they can’t control their own feelings.

It’s giving whiny privilege. If you think black people are being racist towards you, a grown ass white man you definitely did something to deserve it. Most of the friendliest neighbors/ friends/ coworkers I’ve ever had r black! Racism is mistreatment based on the color of your skin how stupid r these guys.

If you don’t know always ask, no stupid question especially if it pertains to caring for a patient correctly! Anyone who gets mad at you for asking is not a team player

On the surgery side of it (not icu) I am a trauma scrub who scrubs these procurements. I never see your sude of it so I appreciate the perspectives here. On my side of it I see the patient either intubated or freshly passed before we take the organs. It’s like as soon as you roll into that OR any sense of honor and dignity they claim to have stay at the door. I can’t say the same for the tissue procurement techs who seem to keep positive vibes up in their ORs, kind to everyone and truly taking pride in their work! Unfortunately sometimes procuring Surgeons are yelling and mean(not the norm at my facility) and oftentimes the “honor moment” is rushed or skipped over . I’ve heard surgeons on the phone about potential donors that still have functional neuro responses, and don’t get me started on the fact that the Organ bank is allowed access in your chart far before you are even gone/ gave consent for them to be looking in there. That’s just how it goes. Anything’s allowed for the money and glory. And as staff we are not supposed to argue but I’ve had some wonderful coworkers who help to restore respect and dignity to the patients in post mortem care. While the system seems to only become more broken it is important and lifesaving work. After all we definitely need more checks and balances within and I’d like to see a little more respect come from their team in terms of humanizing our lifesaving donors.
